"He's not, um, in right now. But I can take a message. There's a pencil round 'ere somewhere..." Theo said.
I groaned, having no choice. “Can you please let him know Ryan called and to call me back when he can. It’s pretty urgent. Case related.”
“You sure I can’t help?” Theo asked.
“Do you know anything about psychopomps?”
“Not a bloody clue,” Theo said before I even finished the question.
“Great. Then just ask Hollis to call me back.”
“Will do. Oh, but you know what? You should check our app."
My mind blanked. “An app?”
“Yeah. It’s called BRAT. Free t’ download and use. Has a whole bunch o’ stuff there.”
“Hollis made an app.”
“Yeah,” Theo said. “It was either that or crypto.”
“What?”
“A joke. That was a joke. Hollis is too dangerous for crypto. Anyway, give that app a go…”
“Okay. Thanks, man,” I said before dropping the call.
Owain nearly vibrated on my lap as we waited for the app to download. It seemed to take forever, but finally it reached a hundred percent and the little button to open it went from white to blue. I clicked on it as fast as I could, tapping my foot on the floor while it loaded.
BRAT flashed across the screen before the words Bio-Resonance Activity Tracker appeared next to each of the letters of the acronym.
I pressed the little menu button, located the part of the app that explained different entities, and finally scrolled far enough to reach mediums and psychopomps.
Owain gasped when he saw it and pushed my hand away, grabbing for the phone as he clicked on the right link and waited for it to open.
The section on mediums was huge. Pages upon pages of intel we couldn’t really use.
He clicked on the other link leading to the psychopomp page and his entire body slumped at the sight of barely a full page of information.
Nothing we didn’t know already.
Supernatural entities.
Guides of the souls.
Honourable mythology mentions.
A badass drawing of a scary-looking dude rowing a weird-ass boat.
And then I got an elbow in the ribs.
“LOOK!” Owain screeched directly into my ear, jabbing his finger at the bottom of the screen.
Human psychopomps are rare but not impossible. When a human is possessed by a demon at the time of conception, and gives birth to a child on one of the sacred holidays when the veil between the mortal world and the world of spirits is the thinnest, that child can reach across the divide and guide souls through.
“That’s it?” Owain thumbed the screen but nothing else showed up.
“Looks like,” I said. “But we have a direction now, at least. And I can text and ask Hollis to see if he can dig up more.”
