Blinding Lights

When I commit to something, I don’t bail, and unfortunately for me, that includes my friend’s wedding. I told Hunter and Olivia that I’d be there, so I will.

I let Henley’s call go to voicemail, and instead, send her a text.

Me: I’m beat. I’ll call you in the morning.

Henley: No you won’t. Pick up.

She calls me seconds after her message comes through and I sigh loudly, running a hand down my face as I answer. “Hen?”

“Beckett! Welcome home.”

“Thanks. What’s so urgent that we had to speak tonight?”

“Nothing. I just know you and there’s no way in hell you’re going to call me in the morning. Game days are all about the game.” She delivers her line as if my commitment personally inconveniences her, and I let my gaze drift upward, resisting the urge to groan.

“As they should be, dear sister. Anyway, how are you?”

“I’m great. Never better. I was hoping you’d stop by the store sometime today. I guess you were busy.”

My eyes flit shut and I wince at her tone. I had plans to do just that. I even took an Uber there. Until I saw Lily in the window and told the guy to keep driving.

It’s hard enough planning for when we’ll inevitably have to talk on the weekend. I wasn’t prepared for that reunion to happen ahead of schedule.

Just seeing her had me reeling.

Over a damn kiss. A simple press of the lips. An explorative tongue that… What the fuck, Beckett?

“So…” Henley interrupts my madness and I almost thank her. “Where were you?”

“I had practice, Henley.”

“Yeah, this morning.”

“It’s been a busy day. I’m not avoiding you on purpose.” Just your business partner. “I’m going to see you for three days after the game.”

As I say it out loud, that little reminder has my stomach twisting.

“Yeah, you are.” Her voice lifts and I have no doubt it’s because she’s picturing how uncomfortable I’m going to be and taking great pleasure in that notion. “I can’t believe the wedding is here.”

“Yay.” I fake enthusiasm and Henley laughs.

“Oh, stop. You love Hunter and Olivia.”

“You’re right. I care about them. There’s nowhere I’d rather be.”

Henley’s quiet until her stifled laughter filters through the phone. “You took it too far. No one is going to believe that.”

“Whatever. I’ll see you there.”

“You’ll see me tomorrow. We’re all coming to the game, remember?”

How could I forget, but who’s “all”? “I remember you and Mom are coming.” I arranged a box for them. Mom didn’t mention anyone else.

Of course my mind immediately conjures an image of Lily. But…why would Lily go? Surely her “we” just means Mom.

“Yes, me and Mom. As well as Lily…” She names a few more people. Who? I have no fucking idea because I tuned out.

Lily’s coming to my game.
