“Are you sure? Maybe check again?”
“Okay,” I state, and I turn around to head to the bathroom to grab his thermometer.
When I return and swipe the tool across his forehead, he has a slight pout to his lips.
“You’re at 99.5. It’s coming down. That’s good.”
“Yeah, I’m still beat though.” He stretches his arms out.
“Are you going to skip practice tomorrow?”
“I don’t have a choice. I have to show up. The question is whether they’ll send me home again.”
My lips tilt to a frown. “Well, try to take it easy tomorrow, especially if you do practice. Okay?”
“Yeah. I will. It’s going to be a short day anyway. Only morning practice. I was going to go to Ant’s place after for Thanksgiving dinner with his family, but I’ll probably skip it. I don’t want to get everyone sick.”
“Probably for the best,” I agree.
“Are you still spending Thanksgiving with your family?” he asks.
“That was the plan,” I state, which is weird because that is the plan. I’m flying out of Logan Airport first thing tomorrow to meet my sister and mom at a restaurant in Ann Arbor.
I just…
I don’t want to.
Does that make me the worst sister and daughter ever?
I know I’m probably a constant disappointment, but I don’t care right now. I’m still not one-hundred percent myself, and I don’t want to leave Calvin alone.
“Maybe we could have Thanksgiving together,” I suggest, testing the waters.
His eyes perk up. “Just the two of us?”
“That okay? I could cook us a miniature Thanksgiving with the best fixings.”
“I would love that. If you don’t mind.” Our eyes stay on each other, not breaking contact.
I’m about to tell him that I don’t, but then I remember something extremely important.
“Shoot! Where am I going to find a defrosted turkey the day before Thanksgiving?”
“Let me handle that part, especially if you plan on cooking everything.”
“Yeah, I’ll cook the turkey too. I just need the staple item to cook.”
I glance down at my watch, and see I still have some time to make it to the grocery store before it closes.
“Are you sure you are okay with having Thanksgiving with me? Feeling up for it?” I ask him. I don’t want to drag him down and make things worse.
“Yeah. I honestly can’t think of anything better. Just the two of us, celebrating together.”
Honestly, same, but I don’t speak those words out loud.
