Lettie: Is it your penis again?

I choke a little and cover it up with a cough. I didn’t expect that text from my girl.

Me: You’ll have to come over to find out

Chapter Thirty-One

Calvin

There’s a knock on my door. “Come in!” I yell from the living room.

I roll up the sleeves of my white button-down as Lettie enters my condo.

She takes a few steps forward but stops in place as we make eye contact for the first time.

“Wow.” She gulps. “You look great.”

Lettie is wearing a dark purple cardigan—the same shade she wore on our first date down on the Cape.

“You look beautiful,” I say, my throat dry.

She rolls her eyes, ignoring my compliment. “Sorry I’m late. I wanted to get here earlier, but work was busy.”

“Not a problem.” I glance at the clock on my wall. We have about fifteen minutes until we need to be at Sebastian’s place downstairs. I wish we had more time to spend together, but maybe I could convince her to come back to my place after. I have to be at the stadium for practice early tomorrow, but she tends to be an early riser, too.

“Thank you for my car,” she blurts out and I arch my eyebrow at her in question. “My car just randomly showed up in front of my building. I figured it was you.”

It was me, but getting her car fixed and back to her was the least I could do. It was no big deal. I shrug my shoulders, because I don’t know what to say since I’m not going to take credit for it.

There’s a small pause between us, and she lets out a defeated sigh.

“So, is it just us tonight, or is it a large group? Do you know?” she asks as she bites a fingernail.

“It’s us; Sebastian; Annie; Bryce, who is our kicker; and his girlfriend Goldie, who is roommates with Annie. Have you met Bryce and Goldie yet?”

“I’m not sure,” she responds with a touch of hesitancy in her voice.

“I’ll introduce you. They are both great. They’ll love you.”

She flashes a half smile at me, but her face turns into a frown.

Lettie is wringing her hands together and tapping her feet. I take a few steps forward until I’m inches from her. I lean in, but whisper into her ear, “Can I hug you?”

“Yes,” she breathes.

I embrace her and don’t let go. She relaxes into my arms, and I can’t help but be proud of that fact. I love that she feels safe with me at this point. I pull back an inch and kiss her forehead. “Hi.”

“Hi,” she repeats in that sweet voice of hers.

“Sorry, I’m late.”

“You already apologized,” I remind her. “And there’s no need. I’m just happy to see you.”

She tilts her head up to look directly into my eyes, and I throw a reassuring smile her way. We are tangled up in each other’s arms, neither of us breaking contact.

She clears her throat. “So, do you think Sebastian is going to be upset?”
