Calvin: So you are telling me I get to see your beautiful face tomorrow?
Chapter Seventeen
Scarlett
“Touchdown!” The leggy brunette, Annie, screams next to me as she jumps up and down in excitement with the rest of the seventy thousand fans in attendance for the New England Revolutionaries’ home opener.
We high-five each other and then return our eyes to the field to watch the extra point sail through the uprights. The Revs are up by a touchdown with just a few minutes left on the clock.
I thought it would be weird to watch the game with a total stranger, but Annie and her friend are nice and chill.
I never put much thought into my brother’s taste in women because—gross—but Annie is great. She’s much taller than I expected; she’s at least six feet with an athletic body type.
She’s sporting standard Boston Revolutionaries gear, but not a particular player’s jersey. Her smile is bright, and small talk hasn’t been awful.
“Ready?” I turn to Annie after the game clock expires, and Boston secures their second win of the season and first home win.
She rubs her chin and stares at me blankly. Did my brother not tell her to come to the locker room after the game? I’m assuming by the look on her face and my brother’s mediocre communication skills that would be a no.
“My brother wants us to meet him downstairs after the game,” I explain, deciding to omit the words in the family area since I don’t want to scare the poor girl off. I have no idea what the details of their relationship are.
Am I curious?
Yes.
But I probably have no business asking, even if I’m desperate to know.

Okay, so my brother is always the last to exit the locker room—until tonight.
I smirk as my massive brother enters the family waiting area, a room a few doors down from the players’ locker room. His blond hair is wet, and the top button of his black pants is unbuttoned.
“You’re usually one of the last players,” I can’t help but comment to my brother.
His eyes scan the crowded family room, but his shoulders droop the longer he searches.
“She just ran to the bathroom and will be back soon,” I mention to Sebastian as we both glance over to the entrance door to see Annie walk through. His face immediately lights up, and he rushes over to her, without a trace of goodbye to me.
I chuckle under my breath and lay a hand on my purse and phone to ensure I have everything before I head home.
“Hey, Lettie.” I hear those two little words from behind. I turn around to face Calvin and notice a Cheshire-size grin on his face.
I haven’t seen Calvin in person in a while, well, other than on my television during games. We talk through text often but never in person. With the start of training camp starting shortly after the gala and then into pre-season, both Cal and Sebastian have been so busy. I have, too, especially since Sebastian always works at the foundation less during football season.
He looks good. All right, fine, more than good. He’s wearing a light gray henley that hugs his enormous biceps, paired with dark jeans and dress shoes. He’s sans hat; his bald head glimmers with a few remaining drops of water.
“Hey, Calvin.” My tone is even, despite my rapid heartbeats.
“Hey! It’s good to see you here. You should come down more often.”
“The season just began,” I remark.
“That it has.” His eyes scan the room. “Your brother come out yet?”
“Yeah, he just left with Annie.”
“Really?” He pauses and scratches his chin. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen that guy move so fast.”
