I knock on the door, and it flings open a minute later.
It’s her.
“You’re not Sebastian.”
Dammit. I said that foolish line again.
She lifts her eyebrow. Does she remember five years ago when we first met, like I do?
Not that I think about that a lot, or the way my heart hammers every time I spend time with her.
Although I don’t see her often, not as much as one would think, considering Sebastian is my best friend. I could count on one hand how many times I’ve seen her this year so far.
Four.
I’ve never run into her at Sebastian’s place before, even though she lives close enough. She hardly visits him here, or if she does, it’s when I’m not around.
“Hey, Lettie.” She blushes the same shade of strawberry as her hair every time I call her that. I don’t know Sebastian’s sister well, definitely not well enough to have a nickname for her, but I don’t really care.
My eyes flick down her body without permission. She’s sporting a white blouse tucked into black slacks with matching black power heels that give her a little more height. I’m still an entire head taller than her, even with her extra boost.
I wonder if she would leave those pretty black heels on in the bedroom…
Scarlett turns her body away from me and coughs into her elbow.
What was I saying? Oh. Yeah. “Is Sebastian around?”
“Hey, man.” Sebastian appears near the doorway, phone pressed to his ear. He pulls it away and mouths, I’ll just be a second, before disappearing into another room.
I take a step farther into the apartment, and Scarlett gestures to the couch, encouraging me to take a seat. I bend down until my butt lands on Sebastian’s extra-large, suede couch. Scarlett stands next to the sofa, crossing her arms across her body with a slight sway.
“How’s the scholarship process going?” I ask, sticking to safe topics.
Scarlett provides scholarships to aspiring student-athletes to help fund their future education, amongst a million other things. However, their college scholarship program for female athletes who should earn free rides but don’t is one of my favorite offerings. I’m also a frequent donor, but I keep that under tight wraps.
Her eyes light up for a quick second before she’s back to neutral.
“Good!” Her eyes glance at me before drifting to her feet. “We finished reviewing the applications, and we just decided on our winners. It was a hard decision, but it’s the most money we’ve awarded to date. I just need to stuff the letters and mail them out soon.”
Scarlett is usually reserved—never talking too much—but if I ever want to get her chatting, I know asking her about the foundation is the best way to do so. She is passionate about what she does and is amazing at it.
Sebastian walks out into the living room then, stuffing his phone into his back pocket. “Sorry about that.”
“No problem, man.” I stand up and take a step forward, shaking his hand like we don’t spend most days together. “Still up for grabbing dinner, or do you want a rain check?”
“Yeah, still am. Scarlett and I were just finishing up selecting our scholarship winners.”
“She was just telling me about that. That’s awesome.”
“Yeah, I’m excited.” He turns to face Scarlett and speaks directly to her. “Are you okay sending out all the notices tomorrow without my help?”
“Yes,” she confirms with the slightest eye roll. I’m not sure Sebastian even noticed it, but I catch the tiny moment of sass.
“Okay, great. We’ve got practice, and I’ve got another meeting abou—”
Scarlett cuts him off. “I got this.”
“I know,” he admits sheepishly. “I just feel terrible not helping. Plus, I love that part.”
