“Not if you keep calling me muffin butt!” I whisper-yell.
He laughs. “I thought you’d like that.”
“Where did you even come up with that? It’s awful!”
He shrugs. “Well, the man over there is eating a muffin … and you kind of have a good butt. So it just slipped out.”
I blink a few times, surprised. “I have a good butt?”
He wiggles uncomfortably in his seat, and I have the inkling he hadn’t meant to say that out loud. He clears his throat. “Objectively speaking … as a straight male … yes.”
“Huh,” I say, still baffled. “Todd never mentioned my butt.”
Brooks's head whips over to look at me directly. “Are you serious?”
Now I’m the one feeling uncomfortable. This is territory Brooks and I have never entered in our friendship. We don’t talk in detail about the people we date, and we definitely don’t talk about each other’s derrieres.
“Yeah … but I mean, he complimented other things.”
He scoffs. “What, like your mind?”
My jaw drops and I smack his shoulder. “Yes, in fact! What’s wrong with that?”
He crosses his arms over his chest with a smug smile on his face. “Nothing. It’s just … Most women already know they have a great mind. What they don’t know is if they have a good butt.”
I shake my head but can’t help but laugh at his words. “Well … you’re not wrong.”
Ten minutes later, our flight boards. We’re in first class and the flight attendant brings us complimentary champagne. Of course, both flight attendants happen to be young and female … and instantly enamored with Brooks.
“Can I get you anything else, sir? Anything at all?” The brunette one bats her lashes at him.
“We’re good.” He places his hand on top of mine. “But thank you.”
She gives me a tight smile then walks to her seat at the front of the plane.
I start laughing to myself and Brooks eyes me curiously. “What’s so funny?”
“How do you deal with this all the time?”
He furrows his brow. “Deal with what?”
I lower my voice to a whisper. “Having the attention of every female under the age of seventy-five on you at all times.”
His head jerks back as if he’s offended. “That is not true.” He pauses. “I also have the attention of the ones over seventy-five.”
“Oh, you’re so full of it!” I give him a playful push and he throws his head back laughing like he does when he really thinks something is funny.
I turn to face the window to keep myself from looking at his neck.
Chapter 12
Brooks
Junior Year MIT
“Hey, what are you doing tonight? Wanna watch a movie?” I ask Molly after studying together for our exam. It’s Friday night, and I’ve already had several girls ask me out. But all I really want to do is hang out with Molly Vanderbilt.
She smiles. “Actually, Todd is taking me to a new restaurant. The Zagat Guide says it’s amazing.”
