“Because I got some information this morning, and I’m trying to see if it connects to what happened that night.”
“What information?”
“Nothing confirmed yet, mama. Once I know something, I’ll tell you.”
“Cassian.”
“Shakaylen,” I answered, already knowing she was about to start questioning me.
“Don’t start that shit. I’m just asking.”
“And I’m telling you I don’t have all the answers yet.”
She sucked her teeth. “Whatever.”
I chuckled. “You good over there, though?”
“Yes, I’m fine.”
“Aight. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Okay, bye.”
I ended the call and looked back at Marlin.
“She said the nigga had gold teeth. That’s the only thing she could see because it was dark.”
Marlin nodded. “Aight. I’ll see what else I can find out about the driver.”
“Get me something solid before we start putting names on shit. I need to know if that’s the same truck and who was actually in it.”
“Got you, boss man.”
“And Marlin, if you find out David had anything to do with that night, I wanna know before anybody else does.”
“Say less.”
He headed out, leaving me and Kendric alone again.
Kendric looked over at me. “You think David had something to do with that shit?”
“I don’t know yet. But that nigga been asking too many questions about Kaylen for me to ignore it.”
“Yeah, that shit starting to sound funny.”
“Exactly. That’s why I want Marlin to make sure before I do anything.”
I wasn’t about to go off somebody’s word and start making accusations. But if David was the reason some nigga had been following Kaylen around that night, I was gonna have a serious fucking problem with him.
Kendric and I talked a little longer before I checked the time. I had a new group of trainees coming in, and I needed to get out on the floor to see what they were working with.
“Come on, nigga. We got work to do.”
He pushed himself out of the chair. “Man, I was just getting comfortable.”
He laughed as he followed me out of the office. We headed toward the training area, where the new batch of men was waiting for us. I had a business to run, and whatever David had going on wasn’t about to stop me from handling my shit.
