I didn’t feel like getting up, so I hollered for whoever to come in. The moment I saw my father standing in the doorway, I rolled my eyes.
“Who was that?” he asked with a smile.
“Nobody.”
I didn’t know why he was standing in my doorway trying to make conversation when he knew damn well I wasn’t fucking with him.
“Was that your sister? Is she okay?”
“Why the fuck you wanna know?” I snapped. “Ain’t you the one who went and gave her up to a nigga we didn’t even know?”
His smile disappeared. “I know, baby girl, but you and your mama don’t have to keep throwing that up in my face.”
I let out a laugh and shook my head. This nigga couldn’t be serious.
“You lucky that’s all I’m doing.”
I looked past him when I heard my mama’s voice coming from the hallway.
“Because a part of me wanna shoot the shit out of yo’ ass,” she added.
I busted out laughing. The way she said that shit, I knew she wasn’t in the mood to play with him.
“Y’all are really going overboard with this,” my father complained.
“Going overboard?” My mama raised her voice. “Nigga, have you lost your fucking mind? You went and auctioned my fucking baby off because of some promise you made!”
“I told you what the promise was.”
“Yeah, you telling me now, after my fucking child went missing! Anthony, we could’ve packed our shit and left.”
“It doesn’t work like that, Kamia, and you know it. When you got ties to a cartel or the mob, you can’t just up and leave whenever you feel like it.”
“Like hell! There are ways to change your identity.”
He rubbed a hand over his face. “I guess you’re not gonna listen to me.”
“I sure the hell ain’t. I don’t wanna hear shit else you got to say.”
“I guess.”
He shook his head and walked past her without another word. My mama watched him leave before stepping into my room.
“Hey, baby. You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“He wasn’t in here trying to talk you into going somewhere with him so he could sell you too, was he?”
I fell back against my pillows laughing. I couldn’t believe she’d actually let that shit come out of her mouth, but again, this was my mama. She didn’t have a filter, especially when she was pissed off.
“Nah, mama, he wasn’t.”
“Good. Have you heard from your sister yet?”
“Yeah, I talked to her.”
“Is she okay?”
