I looked at her. “Creepy?”
“Yes, creepy. Who the fuck has a room like that in their basement?”
A smile pulled at my mouth. “You don't wanna know.”
Her fork stopped halfway to her mouth. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“Exactly what I said, ma.” I took another bite of my French toast.
Her eyes narrowed. “See, that's exactly the type of weird shit I'm talking about.”
I laughed. “Just eat your food.”
“Don't tell me what to do.”
Before I could fuck with her ass some more, my phone started vibrating against the counter. I glanced at the screen and recognized the number immediately. It was the young nigga I'd sent to look into David.
That was quicker than I expected.
I grabbed my phone and stood from the island.
“I'll be back.”
Shakaylen looked up at me. “Where you going?”
“Damn, you keeping tabs on me now?”
“Nigga, bye.”
I laughed under my breath as I stepped away from the island and answered the call.
“Talk to me.”
“Boss Man, I found something.”
I stayed in the kitchen but moved far enough away from Shakaylen to focus on what he was saying.
“What you got?”
“Been digging like you told me, keeping that shit quiet. That nigga David been moving around more than usual since last night.”
“Moving how?”
“He met with two niggas early this morning. I don't know who they are yet, but I'm working on that. One of them stayed with him for damn near an hour before he left.”
“That don't tell me shit.”
“I know. That's not why I called.”
I leaned against the counter and glanced over at Shakaylen. She was still eating, but she'd gotten quiet enough for me to know her ass was listening.
“Then get to it.”
“David's been asking questions about the girl from the auction.”
I straightened up. “What kind of questions?”
“Who she is. Where she came from. Shit like that.”
