My mouth dropped open.

“Your fucking what?”

One of the officers looked between us. “Fiancée?”

“Yeah.” Cassian nodded like his lying ass hadn’t just made that shit up on the spot. “It’s a long story.”

“Ain’t no damn long story!” I got up from the couch. “I met this nigga yesterday!”

Cassian pressed his lips together, and I could tell his ass was trying not to laugh.

I pointed at him. “And stop fucking smiling!”

The officer turned his attention back to me. “Ma’am, are you injured?”

The officer nodded. “Okay. If you decide you want to leave, no one here can prevent you from doing so.”

“Trust me, I heard you.”

After a few more questions, they finally headed toward the door. Cassian thanked them, waited until they were gone, then closed and locked it.

The second that lock clicked, he turned around.

All that calm shit he’d been giving them officers disappeared from his face.

“Aight, ma.” He walked toward me and held out his hand. “Give me your fucking phone.”

I looked at his palm before slowly bringing my eyes up to his.
