Promised To A Menace

“What?” he asked through a chuckle. “I’m just asking.”

“Well, don’t. I need you to come over here and watch her until I get back.”

“What the hell am I watching her for? She a grown ass fucking woman.”

I closed my eyes for a second and sucked my teeth. This nigga was already getting on my damn nerves, and it wasn’t even that late in the morning.

“Nigga, don’t you think I know that?”

“Then why don’t you just let her ass go?”

“Because I don’t trust David,” I replied, my tone turning serious. “I told you how locked in that nigga was on getting shorty. I don’t know what his ass might try, and I’m not letting her walk out here just for him to find her and drag her into some shit.”

Kendric went quiet for a second.

“Yeah, you right.”

“Exactly. So you gone do it or not?”

“Yeah. Give me about ten. I’ll be there in a few.”

“Aight, bet. I’m about to head out. The key is where I keep it.”

“Bet.”

I ended the call and tossed my phone into the cup holder. I wasn’t like most niggas. Kendric might’ve been my boy, but that didn’t mean his ass had free access to my house whenever he felt like it.

I kept a spare key outside for situations like this, and once he was done using it, his ass better put it right back where he found it.

My first stop for the day was downtown. One of my clients, Attorney Akira Whitmore, had court this morning, and normally I wouldn’t have needed to be here myself. I had niggas on my payroll who could handle shit like this without me standing over them.

But Akira wasn’t a regular client. She had been receiving threats for the past two weeks behind one of the cases she was working on, and whoever was sending them knew a little too much about her schedule for me to take this shit lightly.

By the time I pulled into a parking garage, two of my men were already waiting. I parked, got out, and made my way over to them.

“We good?” I asked.

“Yeah. We checked the building and the route she’ll be taking in. Everything straight.”

“And the garage?”

“Checked that too.”

I nodded before looking around for myself. I trusted the niggas who worked for me. I wouldn’t have hired their asses if I didn’t.

But trusting somebody didn’t mean I stopped checking behind them. This was my company. If something went wrong, nobody was going to remember the name of the nigga I had standing at the door.

They were going to remember mine.

“Where she at?”

“Upstairs. She could be coming in about five.”

“Bet.”

I adjusted my watch and headed toward the entrance with them.

A few minutes later, the elevator doors opened and Akira stepped out with her briefcase in one hand and her phone in the other.
