“Answer the phone, ma,” Cassian mumbled beside me, his eyes still closed.
“I don't know who it is.”
“Then answer it and find out.”
I sucked my teeth and reached for my phone again. Whoever this was clearly wasn't going to stop calling, and I wasn't about to keep listening to it ring. I slipped out of bed and headed into the bathroom, pulling the door closed behind me before accepting the call.
“Hello?”
“Hey, beautiful.”
I pulled the phone away from my ear and looked at the number again. Who the fuck was this? I hadn't been giving my number out to anybody.
“Who is this?”
“David.”
I stood there for a second with the phone pressed against my ear. Out of all the people who could’ve been calling me, his ass was the last person I expected to hear from. How the hell had he gotten my number? Courtney had access to it at work, but I had no proof his nosy ass was the one who’d passed it along.
“What do you want, David?”
“Damn, I can't call and check on you?”
“Not at this time of night. How you get my number anyway?”
“That ain't important right now.”
“It's important to me.”
“Look, Shakaylen, I ain't calling to argue with you. I just got something I think you need to know.”
I leaned against the bathroom counter, already regretting answering the damn phone.
“Then say what you gotta say.”
“Let me ask you something. You ever wondered why Cassian Jefferson was so determined to get you out of that warehouse?”
I frowned. “What are you talking about?”
“I'm asking you a question. You really think everything that happened that night was a coincidence?”
“David, if you got something to say, say it. I'm not about to play no guessing game with you.”
“Then ask Cassian what his daddy promised your father twenty-five years ago.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What?”
“You heard me. Better yet, ask him how long the Jeffersons been planning for you to become part of their family.”
I pulled the phone away from my ear for a second before putting it back.
“David, what the fuck are you talking about?”
“I'm telling you something you should've known a long time ago.”
“Then stop talking in circles and tell me what it is.”
