“What happened to ol’ girl?”

My brows pulled together as I looked over at Kendric. “What ol’ girl?”

“See.” He dropped his feet from my desk and sat forward, laughing. “This exactly what the fuck I be talking about.”

“Nigga, what are you talking about?”

“The lil’ thick one you was fucking with. Pretty brown skin, always had her hair in some long-ass ponytail.”

I stared at him, trying to put a face to who the hell he was talking about. Nothing came to mind.

“That ain’t narrowing shit down.”

“Damn!” Kendric fell back into the chair laughing. “Cold-ass nigga.”

“How the fuck I’m cold because I don’t know who you talking about?”

“Because you was just fucking with her a couple of months ago.”

“And?”

“And?” He shook his head. “Bruh, you ever think about actually keeping one?”

I twisted my face up. “Keeping one?”

“You know what I mean.”

“Then say what you mean.”

Kendric stared at me for a second before a grin slowly pulled at his mouth. “You difficult as fuck.”

“And yet, here you are.”

“Unfortunately.” He laughed. “I’m talking about settling down, nigga. Finding somebody you actually fuck with outside of fucking.”

I leaned back in my chair. That wasn’t something I spent much time thinking about. It wasn’t that I had anything against relationships. I just hadn’t met a woman who made me want to rearrange my life to make room for her.

Sex was easy. Everything that came after it was where shit usually got complicated. And I was particular. Very fucking particular.

“When I find somebody worth keeping around, I’ll keep her around.”

Kendric’s eyebrow lifted. “With your picky ass? Good luck.”

“I don’t need luck.”

“See, that’s that arrogant shit.”

“Nah, nigga, it’s confidence.”

“Arrogance.”

“Call it whatever the fuck you want, bruh.”

I knew what I wanted, and I didn’t have time for games. Looking good wasn’t enough to make me ignore how grimy people could be.

I wasn’t trying to get caught up in no kind of shit.

As we continued chopping it up, my phone went off in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the caller ID. The second I saw who it was, I sucked my teeth and sent the call straight to voicemail.
