His words actually hurt me, but I had to remind myself that they weren't Erik's.
With determination, I turned away, grateful that he left it at that, even though the strange tugging in my chest was growing stronger.
“Wait.”

I paused, this time not turning around.
What if he knew?
Then I would really be doomed...
When he said nothing, I slowly turned to face him, trying to remain standing straight, keep my shoulders taut, and blur my gaze by avoiding focusing on him.
However, my eyes fixed on him of their own accord, burying themselves in his peridots, and a tingling quiver rushed through my core.
“Did you...” he began, and the feeling in my stomach intensified. “Did J...” Quentin bit his lip as if the words were causing him pain, which confused me even more. “Did your friend get what is hers?”
The muscle inside my chest began to throb violently.
Quentin was staring at me, scanning my expression with crushing precision.
“Yes...” I somehow managed to get the words out, desperately trying to suppress the way he had pronounced the name J.
God, how could I lie to this man when I couldn't even do it to Grace or Larissa?
“How can it be...” Quentin continued abruptly, but stopped and ran his fingers through his hair. “Damn it, how can it be that you know her?!”
He let go of his hair and clenched his hands into fists, trying to look elsewhere, yet not turning away from me completely. Instead, he leaned his fists on the table next to him and stared fiercely at the tabletop beneath him.
“Have you been spying on me?”
He pushed himself away from the table and stared at me again, continuing to overwhelm me.
“Did you befriend her to hurt me?!”
It was as if something negative had settled in his gaze, if I wasn't misinterpreting his furrowed brow.
Only now did I realize the meaning of his question.
He thought I was spying on him through J, and he was... angry?
Was he just pretending? Was I even interpreting his emotions correctly?
“No,” I quickly answered all his questions.
Quentin stared at me as if he didn't want to believe me, and I resisted the painful urge to look away.
“How is she?”
Our eyes locked again, and he scanned me once more.
How long would it take him to see through me?
And suddenly I knew that I had to do everything I could to make sure he never found out.
