A Society of Traitors

“I hope so,” he said tonelessly, without turning to her.

She took advantage of the moment and shot me a look that lacked any emotion – just as I was used to from her – but something told me she was hesitating. That she didn’t want to just walk away.

Damn it, Julie! Stay here!

“Are you coming with me?” she eventually asked Miles, and I thanked her inwardly, even though I would have liked to confront her about her condition.

“Go ahead. We don’t want anyone to see us together and get us in trouble,” Miles responded unexpectedly.

Shit.

Julie looked at me again, hesitated for a moment, then left the room.

I was alone. With Miles.

Damn it!

The sound of the old door falling into the metal lock made me flinch.

Everything inside me tensed and I focused on him.

He stood there by the window, looking out, his posture relaxed. He seemed lost in thought.

Please go.

He ran his fingers through his hair, which now looked a little messy.

The tingling in my stomach returned.

Maybe it was just the inner unrest of having a Ruisangor near me, or the fact that I was hiding from my rival in a stupid cabinet, waiting to finally get out of here.

Suddenly, he started moving, walking along the windows while looking at the floor, then back outside, and at some point, he disappeared from my field of vision.

Shit.

I held my breath, counted the agonizing seconds, and sent a quick prayer to heaven.

Too late.

The closet door flew open, Miles grabbed me by the collar of my white blouse, which was over the pine-green sweater vest of my uniform, and pulled me out.

Before I knew what was happening, I was pressed against the next cabinet.

A frightened sound escaped my throat.

Due to the difference in our heights, Miles' face was four inches from mine, and his gaze sent an explosive wave of heat through my entire body. He didn't seem surprised at all, but focused. His eyes… intense.

“How...”

The words stuck in my throat.

“Your scent, little wolf…” His slightly hoarse voice sounded as pleasant as it had that evening when he had been as close to me as he was now. “...is so distinctive, how could I forget it?”

The tense expression on his face gave way to a slight smile. It came so unexpected that I could only stare at him.
