And this child was going through all of this with me...

I should have stopped, not used my element, but I had no other choice. I had to get stronger, gain control over this power before it took control of me.

The only chance to protect this child from the coldness of this place was my own coldness.

Chapter 8

Miles

Same Old Sog (S.O.S. Part 1)

Two Feet

“Still the same old Miles.”

She grinned at me playfully and strode through my apartment to the bar. Once there, she picked up one of the crystal glasses and waved it around in the air.

“Come on. A little welcome drink.”

I sighed in amusement and surrendered.

She had only just arrived, and I had this uneasy feeling I owed it to her.

I wasn't going to tell her today that it was her who had sent me into an alcoholic crisis back then. Not after everything else she had done for me.

One drink a week. That was the amount I could control myself with.

I walked over to her and poured her some of my most expensive bourbon.

“You've become generous,” she teased, her voice transporting me back to my turbulent past.

“Two years is a damn long time,” I eventually said, settling down on the bar stool next to her.

I gave myself a few seconds to look at her. She still had the playful red curls that reminded me of her fiery character, the athletic physique, and those memorable blue, almost ice-blue eyes.

“You haven’t changed much.”

Of course, as a Transformed, she couldn't age, but something was new. Her elegant style?

“On the outside,” she laughed and took a sip from her glass. Then she let her eyes wander around my apartment. “And you made it without. I’m impressed.”

I had to chuckle.

“What do you mean? Huh?”

Eventually, I took a sip too and felt the drink burn my throat.

God, I had needed that.

That was the moment the thoughts that had been haunting me for three weeks came back. They weren't really thoughts, more images. Images of her. Of a Senseque who had managed to bring my entire emotional spectrum to life. And it robbed me of all my inner peace.

That goddamn evening had felt so different... Everything about her... and that goddamn dress.

I should never have pulled her onto the dance floor, but something stupid inside me had pushed me to do it, and now she was stuck in my head, irritating me.

“You seem to be doing well here.”

The next sip almost ended up in my lungs.
