I looked up and barely managed to nod before he turned around and disappeared from the dining room, his jaw working.

What a great dinner.

“Welcome to the Copelands.”

I looked at Nash, who had stopped eating and was now leaning back, amused.

Great. If it was going to be like this every evening now, I'd gladly pass.

“Who is that Tania?” I asked, trying not to sound too interested.

“She's the sister of the Russian Alpha.”

“Oh...”

So, Dimitrio was the Russian Alpha...

“So, they're not part of your pack?”

There was something bitter and judgmental in Nash's gaze.

“No, Dimitrio came here with his sister and son and a few other men to take what's not his.”

I blinked in confusion.

“I don't understand...”

Nash rested his elbows on the table in front of him and rubbed his hands together, eventually interlocking his fingers, and his veins began to stand out slightly.

“The Rolanows are here because of the games that start in just over a month. My father wants to marry Emely off to Mikhail.”

“What?”

So that had not been just a bad joke…

“Yes, that's how it works here.”

Julian had mentioned something. But hearing all this from Nash sounded much worse now.

Emely would have to leave her family and go to Russia. For a wedding with a complete stranger?

“Isn't there anything you can do to stop it?”

“Our father is so determined that not even I can do anything.”

“So, you're Daddy's favorite?” I joked, but he didn't seem to find it funny.

“I'm his successor. No more, no less.”

And with that, Nash stood up abruptly, his brows furrowed.

He was angry. But I couldn't tell if it was at me or the content of the conversation.

After he had also left the table, I sighed and listened to the silence filled with muffled noises that seemed to come from everywhere in the house, staring into the flames of the many candles until a man in a black shirt entered the dining room and began to clear the table, not without glancing at me from time to time with yellow-glowing eyes, until he too disappeared again.

What on earth had just happened?

I was new here, so I should continue to observe quietly and adapt, like the chameleon I was.
