Something tightened around my heart.

“Shit,” I blurted out. “How sick is your circle?”

How could they give their own babies away just because they weren’t connected to this hocus-pocus? Did they know what they were doing to these children? Did they know where these kids ended up?

Emely appeared at the table with a wooden trivet, a fork, and the huge pan, placing them on the edge.

“I also don’t understand how you can just give your offspring away,” she snorted and sat down diagonally across from me.

With my stomach growling, I eyed the golden-brown chicken pieces in the pan and suddenly felt like I was Buddy.

I tried to focus on something else, but the topic of ungifted babies wasn’t exactly any better.

“How is it with you guys?” I finally asked Emely, who speared a crispy piece of meat and held it to her lips. “Do you give birth to puppies?”

She paused. Her gaze was obviously disturbed as a loose, almost black strand of hair slipped into her face.

“What’s wrong with you?”

Shaking her head, she began to eat.

I couldn’t help but smirk.

“I don't know...” she continued. “There are very few female Senseque who experience childbearing.” She eyed the piece of meat in front of her. “And I'm not so keen to find out anytime soon.”

My stomach growled, audible only to supernatural ears.

Emely looked at me.

“I'm actually just waiting for you to ask.” She pointed her fork at the pan. “Take some.”

Was she serious?

Hesitantly, I looked from her to the meat, then back at her.

She rolled her eyes and shook her head, so I didn't hesitate any longer and fished a crispy piece of chicken out of the pan.

“Thanks”

Emely just sighed and took another piece from the pan herself.

“I can't believe it,” she laughed softly, sounding as if she was losing her mind. “That I'm sharing my food with a Ruisangor.”

I couldn't help but grin. Neither could Bayla.

When the meat touched my tongue, I suppressed a moan of pleasure.

Damn, she was really good at seasoning.

A cell phone vibrated on the table.

I automatically looked at Julie, but it wasn't her screen that lit up, it was Emely's.

Emely quickly rejected the call, but not quickly enough for me to see who it was.

Kieran.

And there they were again. The unpleasant memories of his aggressive threat, the memories of his strange behavior in the director's office yesterday, and the look on his face when he...
