I jumped and yanked him to the ground with me.
Emely gasped, and some girls screamed as if I had already killed Miles, but he wasn’t making it easy for me.
More and more people gathered around us, flashes of light shot through my vision.
“Stop!” yelled the coach, actually trying to rush forward, but I just nudged him with my fist so that he flew backward through the crowd, which backed away in shock.
“Oh my God!” I heard Jenny exclaim as I swung for the next blow, but Miles gained the upper hand and rolled us across the grass so that I was suddenly pinned beneath him. “Did you get that on camera?”
What did he want? For me to transform?
The blood was already boiling in my veins.
Miles wanted to jump up, not at all going on the offensive.
Was that his way of fighting?
“Coward!” I hissed, but it somehow turned into a growl.
You're transforming, damn it! I heard Nash in my head.
“Please, let him go, Kieran!” Emely's desperate plea followed.
What did they think? That I would let him go before he bled to death on this field?
I knew I couldn't kill him. Not without the right stake. But I could make him suffer.
Miles, who had just been trying to get up, suddenly pulled me to my feet. His grin that of a devil.
“Coward?” he laughed, his hand on my collar. “You obviously haven't met a DeLoughrey before.”
He swung and hit me on the cheek, but not hard enough.
I slammed my fist into his stomach, then another into his throat, hitting him right on the larynx. There was a crack. A reddish glow flickered irregularly through his eyes.
Staggering back, he held his hand to his throat.
A look of surprise crossed his face, as if he were in excruciating pain.
“What on earth is going on here?!” a voice rang out, which should have killed me on the inside, but I managed to get a running start, albeit delayed.
The delay gave Miles a chance to prepare himself, and his foot landed in my stomach, sending me flying backward into the crowd, where I knocked someone to the ground with me.
A horrified murmur went through the agitated crowd, and I rolled off the person, but only managed to half sit up when I looked into their eyes.
Rebecca.
I had landed on her.
“How dare you...”
She sounded hysterical, almost stunned.
With an angry sparkle in her eyes, she jumped up, straightened her white blouse, brown coat, and matching pencil skirt, and I sat there like a stupid idiot on the ground, forgetting Miles for a few seconds and staring up in perplexity.
“What's going on here?!” she blurted out, looking from me to Miles.
“Mr. DeLoughrey!”
