He laughed dryly, without moving the corners of his mouth. That was all I could see.

I kept walking. He kept following me.

“He was following Larissa.”

Raising my eyebrows, I remembered this morning. Kieran had driven after her and parked next to her instead of at our spot.

Had he been trying to hurt her?

He usually stayed away from Legacies.

What was it about the DeLoughreys that seemed to attract trouble?

“Good,” I said, because Miles seemed to be waiting for my words. It felt oddly strange not to see him when I spoke to him. “Then tell her what I just told you.”

This time, I only saw his hands. He flexed them.

I kept walking, but I heard him curse softly from the other side.

“That bastard.”

“Miles,” I sighed, wondering if it had been a mistake to give Miles the impression that Kieran and I were more than just friends. “He's my best friend.”

I reached the end of the shelf. So did Miles. And suddenly we were standing face to face. No shelf to protect us from each other. No tables between us...

“Your best friend, or are you sleeping with him?”

He wasn't laughing. There was a glint in his fixed eyes.

Was he actually... jealous?

Confusion broke out inside me, because even though that had been my intention, I hadn't expected it to work.

I wanted to turn around and go back to my seat, but Miles blocked my way.

I did the first thing that came to mind: I grabbed his cold, rough hand and raised my other hand to hold my bracelet against his palm.

However, Miles' hand shot up much too quickly and grabbed my wrist.

Before I could react, Miles pushed me against the nearest marble column. Without letting go of my wrist.

I gasped and looked up at him.

“How rude of you, Copeland,” he murmured softly, his voice riddled with tension. “I recommend you never do that again, unless you want me to hold metal against your skin as well.” His gaze was piercing, threatening... demanding. “Just know that the next time you cut yourself on my blades, it will burn worse than silver on the skin of a Ruisangor.”

It all happened far too quickly.

Miles backed away, staring at the bracelet on my hand, which I now let sink breathlessly, shaking his head as if something was bothering him, and a second later he shot through the hallway at Ruisangor speed.

I was left behind. Breathless. Overwhelmed.
