“And because I know you won't stop until I win these election campaigns, I despise every single second in your presence.”

Of course he found back to his cocky smile.

“Bold lie, little wolf.”

“That nickname is inappropriate!” I growled, clenching my teeth.

Why did I let all this get to me?

Miles lifted the left corner of his mouth and moved closer.

“I like inappropriate things, Miss Copeland.”

I couldn't help but stare at him in disbelief as warmth spread through my core, followed by an excited tingling sensation I couldn't suppress before it got the chance to send heat to my cheeks.

“Just admit it,” Miles murmured, stepping away from the shelf to walk past me. But he stopped beside me and leaned in. “You like this game.”

He continued walking until he was behind me.

“Nonsense...”

I had wanted to throw it at his forehead, but all I managed was a soundless whisper.

Miles chuckled softly.

“Is that your heartbeat, Copeland?”

It was just a gesture, but when his fingertip touched the bare skin a few inches below my throat, right where my blouse was slightly unbuttoned, my chest rose in an almost painful shudder.

“I know you’re not afraid of me.”

His finger on my bare skin felt like a crime. But I wasn't in a position to make him pay for it.

“Then what is it?”

He pulled his finger away again. This time, however, I didn't dare gasp for air.

“Am I making you nervous, little wolf?”

I looked up and met his gaze.

Damn it, if I didn't get out of here right now...

I stumbled backward.
