Larissa looked up in confusion. “But according to this document, Bayla must be a male Senseque.”

“That's why it says It doesn't make any sense in the margin,” I sighed.

Nothing made sense. My mother and my identity were an eternal mystery.

Eventually, Larissa looked at Emely. “Your kind seems to be dominant.”

Emely just snorted.

Suddenly a shrill ringtone sounded.

She pulled her phone out of her jacket pocket.

“Yes?”

She had put her phone on speaker.

“Emely.”

Alarik.

I automatically held my breath, and Emely also seemed to panic.

“Harlow just contacted me, saying that the lights are on in my office and wondering if I wasn’t supposed to be at a meeting.”

Larissa’s and my eyes widened at the same time, while Miles laughed quietly and shook his head before giving us that I told you so look.

“Oh… Do you think Bayla Adams is snooping around with the Ruisangor girl again?”

With shocked offense, Larissa and I looked at Emely, who turned away from us.

“In any case, Bayla's not at home,” he murmured, and the fact that he had looked for me – probably to check that I hadn't already run off – sent heat to my cheeks. “And neither are you.”

Miles' grin became even more malicious. Emely didn't find it funny at all and gave him a punishing look before turning further away from us. He just kept grinning.

“Um, yeah... I went for a run.”

Miles put his forehead in his hands and ran his fingers through his hair. Emely turned around at that very moment, and Miles received a withering look. But the panic on Emely's face quickly returned.

“It's probably just the light coming on.”

Something in his voice told me that he knew his light better than we did and that it didn't just come on like that.

Nervousness spread through my stomach.

We were done for.

“Should I quickly go and see if there's anyone in your office?” Emely asked.

“Don't worry. The meeting is over. I'm on my way.”

As if struck by lightning, we all jumped up at the same time.

We had to get out of here. Immediately.

“Okay, then I hope it's nothing, and Harlow was just panicking unnecessarily again,” Emely said, and you could tell that her false facade was almost slipping.

“See you later.”
