A Society of Traitors

Miles couldn’t find his voice, so I said the first thing that came to mind.

“If one of us is missing later, you'll know why.”

I laughed nervously, and Julie shook her head with the corners of her mouth slightly raised. “Fine by me.” And then she disappeared through the door too.

Miles started typing something into his phone, and I watched every movement of his fingers impatiently.

He had long fingers, aesthetic hands decorated with veins, just as elegant as the rest of his appearance. Yet he still looked masculine. Was it because of his even stubble and angular chin? Or his height?

When he was done, a slight smile flitted across the right corner of his mouth. Finally, he looked up and handed me the phone back.

This time, our fingers didn't touch.

A longing tug crept through my stomach.

“You haven't wanted me dead for a long time, little wolf.”

The nickname he had given me was actually meant as an insult, but at that moment it didn't feel that way. It didn't sound like an attack at all, more like a playful observation.

I turned away from him before he could see the blush on my cheeks, shoved the phone into my bag, and strode to the door.

I didn't want to be on the verge of an emotional breakdown again. And he certainly shouldn't know about it.

Just before I reached the door, I felt a hand on the lower part of my upper arm, and suddenly I was pulled around.

This took me so much by surprise that I stared at Miles with wide eyes.

I felt even more color rising to my cheeks, and electric impulses emanated from the spot where he was holding me, bringing back the goose bumps.

“Why can't I believe that you want to help us?”

“Believe what you want,” I hissed, more aggressively than I intended.

Miles continued to hold my arm, which further diminished my concentration.

If he kept this up, Julie's words would take on a completely different meaning...

“Emely... You...”

He hesitated.

Why the hell was he hesitating?! Why was he still holding my arm? Didn't he know what it was doing to me?

My gaze accidentally slipped to his lips.

Didn't he know what his closeness was doing to my entire body?

I was at his mercy. Involuntarily.

I knew I could just pull away from him and leave. He would let me go.

So why was I still standing here?

“We should go now, before we're both suddenly missing.”
