And it was killing me.

“That he hates us. That he wanted to provoke you with this dance.”

It wasn't even a lie. But it didn't feel like the truth either.

Father was the only one who hadn't asked me about Miles, and as much as I thanked him for that, deep down, it left me feeling confused and with an uncomfortable tugging sensation in my stomach.

The training had made me forget that, too.

But just as I was about to turn back to my brother and continue, another distraction entered our property.

Bayla Adams.

My body froze in place, I instinctively narrowed my eyes, and the guys next to me stopped their training to stare at the intruder with alert expressions.

I would have rushed over to her, taken her away before anyone could hurt her and trigger that stupid connection spell she had cast on Julian and me. But it was Alarik who prevented me from doing so. He was walking alongside her.

I didn't know why, but I suddenly felt the urge to take care of whatever the fuck was going on here, so I dropped Finn's stick and made my way toward the two of them, prepared for anything.

It just burst out of me.

“What is this all about?”

I pointed to the girl who had been hanging around Julian before he had left us all with a thousand questions.

Even though I didn't know what was going on, I trusted him. ’Break a leg’ didn't even begin to cover what I was hoping for.

My father wasn’t alone. Nash and Dimitrio Rolanow were with him.

“Who is this girl that doesn’t smell of anything?!” the Russian Alpha blurted out, uninhibited as always, eyeing Bayla suspiciously.

“The Quatura are after her because they think she’s a spy…” My uncle’s gaze swept across the pack members gathered. “…for us.”

A murmur went through the group of men around us, and I narrowed my eyes.

There was no doubt Bayla was one of them. Julian and I were proof of that.

But how could I explain that to anyone here without giving my father another reason to declare war on the other founding families?

Father came down the stairs toward Bayla, who looked from Alarik to the Alpha, unease flickering in her eyes, until Father stopped just in front of her, and his blue irises began to glow.

Bayla stared back at him, her chest moving up and down heavily. Then something unbelievable happened. Her eyes, too, began to glow yellow.

Audibly, I exhaled.
