I snorted.
I hated being below anyone in the hierarchy, but it worked. And Emely was right. I hated rules, but I followed them as long as they didn't fuck with my principles.
“I can play,” I offered. “I'm sure Nash wouldn't have a problem with it.”
Although I would rather ask him, because after all, this was about Emely's future and me playing her husband on paper. But I was sure there would be a solution for that once he became Alpha.
“But we...” Emely began, shock written all over her face. “Ew.”
“Do you find me that unattractive?” I chuckled softly and raised an eyebrow.
“You're Kieran!” she burst out and punched me on the shoulder. “You're like a brother to me!”
“I understand,” I sighed. “And because it’s the same for me, you know that I won’t let you go to Russia if you don’t really want to.”
I looked at her searchingly and knew I had hit a sore spot when she avoided my gaze.
“This isn't about wanting, Kieran.” She met my gaze again, but her voice was even quieter. “It's my damn duty.”
That was the Emely I knew. An ambitious young woman who had had to grow up far too early.
In that respect, we were similar, both having had to take on responsibility far too early. But one fundamental thing set us apart: When people pissed me off and tried to restrict my freedom and personality for the fucking good of the community, I drew the line. She didn't. She sacrificed herself for this pack, would burn for us all if her father demanded it.
“Why exactly is your father doing this?” I pressed.
“The Ruisangors...” she sighed and looked away again. “The number of missing persons has increased again. Bodies have been found. Some with their faces slashed, some drained of blood and with bite marks.”
Inevitably, my head turned in the direction Emely had been looking earlier.
Once again, something tightened inside me.
I didn't like that they were here. That had been the second most bitter surprise when I had returned to Vanderwood. Something that made me regret not having watched the news.
What the hell made these bloodsuckers invade our territory and get so close to us?
I scanned the four sports cars, the other luxury cars, tried to recognize the countless people from my investigations, but they were all strangers to me. And they weren't Legacies, but Transformed.
Wherever the Legacies were right now, they shouldn't get too comfortable. Because, as a little side task, I had decided to send them to hell as well.
The ten or so Transformed immediately noticed that I was staring at them and stared back with their empty, cold gazes.
Heartless, dead beings who didn't belong in this world.
“Don't worry about them,” Emely said… tensely. “Once I'm elected president of the student council, we'll be rid of them.”
I looked at her in surprise.
“You're running for student president?” Why hadn't I guessed? It was the perfect role for her. “Who are your opponents?”
She rolled her eyes as if the mere memory of her competitors was an unbearable burden.
“Nash, Vivienna Westcode, Jenny Bexley, Grace Blair, and…” She looked back at the parking lot. “Miles.”
Who the hell was Miles? Was she talking about the Miles?
“Miles?” I asked, hoping that Emely was introducing me to a guy I didn't know.
But she confirmed my bad premonition.
