“He’s a keeper,” I said as I reached for a steaming mug, topped with an insane amount of whipped cream.
“He sure is,” Evie agreed, snagging one for herself.
No one spoke for a while. Rowan broke the silence after finishing half his mug. “Someone knew exactly where to strike Ethan. We all knew about Sarah, but I didn’t know where she was buried or any of the particulars.”
His phone rang. Rowan fished his cell from his pocket and frowned at the screen. “Speak of the devil.”
Ethan’s voice came over the line. “The Council has been summoned. Meet in two hours. Caelan’s territory. Bring your Floromancer.”
“You mean my wife?” Rowan growled.
“Don’t get butt-hurt,” Ethan said. “You know what I mean.”
“What’s this in regard to?”
“Soren wouldn’t say.”
“Soren’s leading things now?” Rowan’s lip curled.
I had some history with Soren. He wasn’t a bad guy. Not at all. But he tended to lead with his penis, and his penis wasn’t a real responsible fellow.
“Everyone has the right to call the Council,” Ethan snapped. “Two hours, fairy prince.”
He disconnected.
“Fairy prince?” I teased.
Rowan laughed. “That’s a new one. But I kinda like it.”
Evie nudged him with her elbow. “Correct him next time. You’re the fairy king. Big difference. The king can boss him around.”
Rowan dropped a tender kiss on her lips. “You can boss us all around. Maybe that’s why Soren wants you there.”
“Maybe he likes being dominated,” Evie mused.
I laughed. “Wouldn’t surprise me. He has issues. Lots of them.”
“You should bust out your thorned vines. He’d wet himself.”
I cringed. “Gross.”
Evie swatted Rowan. “Be nice. You like Soren. Even if he is a hoe.”
“Everyone likes Soren,” Rowan said. “That’s the problem, isn’t it?”
Rowan’s phone rang again. He answered without checking.
“Bring Moira,” Soren said and hung up.
“Ah shit,” I said.
Chapter
Twenty-Four
Getting called to the Council felt a little bit like getting called to the principal’s office over the loudspeaker during homeroom. The last time I’d taken a job with him, it had gone completely sideways, and I found out there were very few warm holes Soren didn’t like.
On one hand, the knowledge had forever cured me of craving any sort of relationship with him. Not because of the mind-boggling number of partners he’d had, but because he had zero inhibitions and would sleep with anything that moved.
