“Ye are hungry for supper already?”
“Not really, but I was so hungry before… I think I need a second course.”
“Aye, and we can hae some ale, there is always time for an ale.”
We returned to the common room of the inn, where now there were about ten people, two women at tables too, making the room a bit less testosterone-maxed. We sat at the same bench like we were regulars.
Please don’t let us become regulars.
Another ale was brought.
I stared at it with a bit of melancholy.
Torin leaned back in his seat and put up his arm so I could tuck in under it. “Yer face has drawn down, mo leannan.”
“Yeah, it’s kind of… disappointing.”
He smiled. “Och, ye are calling me disappointin’?”
“No.. of course not, you are a lovely surprise.”
“I hae more surprises comin’, soon as we go tae bed.”
I nodded.
“What?”
“See, this is what I mean, our day, while wonderful, feels almost like an acceptance that this is where we live now, you know…?”
“We hae done a lot, ye are likely tired.”
“I am, we arrived in town, got married, sex, a bit of day-drinking, a stroll, and now another ale and it’s like… we’re becoming the people who live here.”
“I daena think tis how it works, but I ken this, mo leannan, we hae been on a long journey, we deserve the rest afore we decide what we will do next.”
“But what can we do next? Nothing but wait — this is the point, I just feel really insignificant. Being lost is not fun.”
“Och ye are in a mood.”
“True, but we might have to live here, Torin, amongst the medieval people. It’s… it’s filthy and the food is not good.”
“If we hae tae stay here longer we will go tae the next town for a larger, more respectable inn. I will make certain we hae clean beddin’ and a chambermaid and better fare. Twill be one where they canna hear us havin’ our campaign from the common room.”
My eyes went wide. “They heard us having sex?”
“Likely,” he laughed, “but tis fine, they are medieval people.”
“But we have to live amongst them.”
Dude leapt up on our table, sat down by my cup, placed his paw in it, and tried to knock it over.
I grabbed it and righted it. “Dude, this is my beer!”
He trilled.
“Fine, I will share because you’re such a good boy.” I poured a tiny bit on the table and he patted it with his paw.
I said, “My mood is up and down today, I love you, I’m so happy with you.” I held up my left hand, “And now I have a sparkly ring, and I loved our wedding, but the honeymoon… I feel lonely looking out over this room with all these strangers.”
