“Maybe.” I lift my chin. “And if I do, I want people around me who will stop me before I turn fear into doctrine.”
Her gaze flicks to Ghar.
He says, “I will.”
No hesitation. No drama. Just the certainty of a man who no longer needs heaven to tell him what loyalty means.
Echo brightens faintly. “Chosen constraint. Interesting.”
Brakk groans. “Do not start naming our coping mechanisms.”
Sira, still pale, says, “Echo, can the chamber be stabilized?”
Echo turns toward the archive rings. “Briefly.”
“Briefly is doing a lot of work,” I say.
“Yes.”
“Can you help us leave?”
Echo pauses.
The pause is not comforting.
“I can reduce local contradiction long enough for your escape route to become less improbable,” it says.
Brakk throws both hands up. “Less improbable! Wonderful! We are saved by the faint downgrade of impossibility!”
“That is accurate,” Echo says.
Ghar’s mouth twitches despite blood at the corner of it.
Then the chamber lurches hard.
The First One rupture expands. White fire crawls along the central hollow, and the archive rings begin rotating again, no longer frozen by contact. The Choir soldiers still capable of moving start retreating in confusion. Some crawl. Some pray. Some stare at Rolaev for orders she does not give.
Echo dims at the edges. “My contact increases structural failure.”
“Of course it does,” I say. “Nobody ancient can ever just visit politely.”
“I am sorry.”
The apology lands with unexpected weight.
I look at Echo, at this remnant of a being whose kind accidentally made the universe and failed to notice us becoming ourselves inside it. “Are you?”
“Yes.” It looks past me, past Ghar, past everyone, as if seeing civilizations unfolded across time. “Also grateful.”
“For what?”
“For showing what persisted.”
The words hit something deep in me.
I want to hate it. Part of me does. Part of me will always look at the absurdity of our origin and feel robbed of a grandeur I claimed not to need. But another part of me, the part currently standing beside the man I love while a foul-mouthed mechanic keeps an escape route alive and a grieving Pi’Rell holds the language of restraint together, understands that grandeur did not disappear.
It moved.
