I fire three times. Three soldiers fall.
Rolaev ’s destruction key lashes into the unguarded archive system.
The central hollow blooms black.
Sira staggers backward. “Anita, she is overloading the preservation core!”
Anita looks toward the interface. The shard lies on the floor where she dropped it, still intact, pulsing in time with the collapsing archive. The full origin layers are no longer sealed cleanly. They flicker behind the chamber walls, pushing outward, not as information now but as presence. The archive is waking beyond preservation. Beyond access. Beyond warning.
Rolaev raises both hands, destruction key burning above her like a small, merciless star. “Better ash than contagion.”
Anita lunges toward the shard.
A Choir soldier breaks through my line, blade drawn.
I meet him halfway.
He is fast. Too fast for a simple fanatic. His blade slides under my guard and bites into the damaged seam at my ribs. I catch his wrist before he can twist. His masked face lifts toward mine, and through the eye slits I see absolute conviction, the kind no argument reaches.
“Silence preserves,” he hisses.
I crush his wrist. “Silence rots.”
His blade falls. I drive him back into the fractured railing and hurl him over. He disappears into the distorted gap without a cry.
Brakk’s voice crackles over a temporary comm line. “Escape route is open! I repeat, open enough! Sira, move your luminous backside!”
Sira grabs the shard before Anita can reach it and throws it across the short distance. Anita catches it against her chest. The moment her skin touches the shard, the archive field slams back into her with visible force. She gasps, knees buckling, but she stays upright.
“Anita!” I start toward her.
She throws one hand out. “Hold the line!”
“You are injured.”
“Everybody is injured. Hold the damn line!”
I hold it.
Not because she commands me. Because she is right.
The next wave hits harder. Choir soldiers advance behind portable shield plates that distort under archive radiation. Heavy weapons spit blue-white fire into the terrace around me. I move through smoke and fractured light, using the terrain as it changes, trusting instinct where geometry fails. A railing becomes a wall, and I use it for cover. A floor segment drops sideways, and I drive a soldier into it before it snaps closed. A pulse round strikes my thigh. Another burns across my left shoulder. Pain becomes weather. I do not ignore it. I move through it.
Behind me, Anita speaks to the archive.
Not in Precursor, not entirely. Her voice shifts between human curses, academic command structures, and fragments of older syntax that make the air tremble.
“No, you do not get to dump the full origin layer into the active field because one zealot poked your trauma buttons. Contextual preservation only. Stewardship-lock the shard. Seal the rest. Yes, I know that is not your default protocol. We are all having a bad day.”
Sira, from the lower escape path, calls back, “Anita, the system is beyond standard command response.”
“I am not giving standard commands!”
Brakk shouts, “She’s bullying the archive!”
“Is it working?” Sira asks.
The central rings stutter.
