“Maybe I can pop over and visit, bring you a late dinner some night,” she murmured, drifting her fingers across my torso.
“That’s one of my biggest fantasies,” I confessed.
“Really? A late-night dinner?” she teased.
“No. My woman, walking in, all demure and normal to the world but underneath wearing something sexy and ready for me. Visiting me late one night with one thing on her mind.”
“Bringing you a sandwich?”
I chuckled. “For after, yes.”
“I see. Any other fantasies you have, Dr. VanRyan?”
“Maybe, but nothing comes to mind right now.”
“I see.”
I propped my head up on my arm. “But seriously, I would love it if you dropped by one night and visited. I really do miss seeing you on this shift.”
“I could do that. Maybe we could find a quiet spot and say hello.” Her fingers drifted lower.
I caught her hand and kissed it. “Keep doing that, and something else will be saying hello again.”
She grinned. “Maybe that was my plan.”
“You got another superhero to shout out, Maddy?” I asked, trailing my lips up her neck and nuzzling her soft mouth.
“I’ve got lots of things to shout out for you,” she replied, gasping as I stroked her where she was still hot and needy.
“We’re already a mess,” I pointed out.
“I like it.”
We had agreed to no more condoms. She disliked them, and I wasn’t a fan either. Being inside her bare was a huge turn-on. Messy, but worth it.
“You’re so hot, baby. Wet for me.”
She whimpered as I touched her, her clit a hard little nub under my fingers. “More, please.”
“Please what?”
“Dr. VanRyan, sex god of the medicine world. Please.”
I liked my superhero name. I liked her. A lot.
“Anything for you, Maddy.”
A couple of weeks later, I ran a hand through my hair, feeling tired and edgy. I sighed as I looked at the notes I had scribbled when our online charting system crashed earlier. I was trying to take advantage of the lull in patients and catch up. I reached for what felt like the hundredth cup of coffee I had started since coming on shift. Most were discarded and forgotten about, littering various spots in the ER—no doubt thrown out by the nursing staff who were well used to my habit of forgetting them once I set them down.
I grimaced as I took a sip. Ice cold with a film on the top, it tasted ghastly. I rose and carried it to the sink, dumping it and rinsing my mouth quickly to dispel the foul flavor of burned, cold coffee and about-to-turn milk.
I grabbed a mint from my pocket, crunching it fast and ridding my mouth of the lingering taste. Leaning on the counter, I let my head fall forward and shut my eyes.
“One more night,” I muttered.
The door opened, the sound of light footsteps entering the room making me sigh.
“Almost done, Nancy. You got a patient for me?”
