She reaches for my belt. I cover her hands with mine and help, unhurried. The buckle and the slide of fabric are loud in the still room. I step out of the trousers and leave them where they fall.
Her shirt comes off next. I take my time with each button, palms mapping the skin I uncover. When the fabric is gone, I set it aside on the closed cabinet instead of dropping it. My own shirt follows. Bare skin meets the room’s cooler air.
I lean down and kiss the line of her collarbone, then lower, mouth open and slow over the soft curve of her breast. She makes a quiet sound and threads her fingers into my hair, holding me there without urgency.
I take my time with both breasts, learning the exact pressure that makes her breath catch, the way her fingers tighten when I use the edge of my teeth. The mirror shows me the flush climbing her chest and the way her thighs shift on the bench.
I lower myself to my knees in front of her. My hands settle on her thighs and ease them farther apart. The padded surface keeps her exactly where I want her. I look up at her once to check, and find only open want in her eyes.
Then I put my mouth on her, slow and thorough, tasting how wet she already is. Her head tips back. A longer, softer moan leaves her throat and is absorbed by the quiet of the room.
I take my time. No rush toward anything. Just the steady attention of my mouth, the quiet sounds she gives me in return, and the knowledge that every piece of this space is finally being used the way I once only imagined while I stood unseen in the doorway.
I stay on my knees longer than either of us expects. My mouth works her slowly, thoroughly, learning every small shift of her hips and every sound she gives me.
When her fingers tighten in my hair, and her breathing turns uneven, I ease back, press one last open-mouthed kiss to the inside of her thigh, and rise.
She watches me the entire time. I step between her knees again, cup her face with both hands, and kiss her so she can taste herself on my tongue. When I finally guide her to lie back along the length of the bench, she goes willingly, eyes never leaving mine.
I follow her down. The padded surface holds us both. I settle between her thighs, brace my weight on one forearm, and look at her for a long moment in the low light and the mirror’s reflection.
Then I push into her slowly, inch by careful inch, watching every change in her expression. The tight heat of her draws a low sound from my own throat. I sink all the way in and stay still, giving us both time to feel it.
“You feel that?” I ask quietly.
She nods, lips parted. “Yes.”
I begin to move in a steady, deep rhythm. Just the long slide of my body into hers, the quiet sounds of skin and breath, the way her hands travel over my back and shoulders as if she’s memorizing me.
I keep my eyes on her face. Every time she starts to close them, I wait for them to open again. The mirror shows me exactly where our bodies join, the flex of my back, the way her knees frame my hips.
I reach down and find her hand, lacing our fingers together against the bench. My other hand stays at the side of her face, thumb stroking her cheekbone. The pace never changes. When her breathing starts to catch, I adjust the angle slightly until the soft sounds leaving her throat turn longer and less controlled.
“That’s it,” I murmur against her mouth. “Just like that.”
She comes with a broken cry, body tightening around me in slow waves. I work her through every one of them, never speeding up, never looking away. Only when the last tremor leaves her do I let myself follow, driving deep one final time and finishing with a low sound against her neck, still holding her hand.
I stay inside her for a long moment afterward, both of us breathing hard but without the usual scramble. When I finally ease out, I shift us carefully, so she is lying along the bench with her head against my chest.
The rope still hangs untouched on its hook. The shelves remain ordered. The mirror reflects the two of us in the low light, quiet and still.
I stroke her hair once, then let my hand rest against her back. She settles heavier against me, the last of the tension leaving her body.
Later, she falls asleep with her head against my chest faster than she usually does, her breathing evening out within minutes, some exhaustion in her finally allowed to catch up now that the house has gone properly quiet around us.
I stay still, careful not to disturb the rhythm of it, watching the rise and fall of her shoulders in the low light coming through the window, some quiet satisfaction settling in me just from being allowed to watch her rest this easily.
I lie awake longer than I mean to, her weight settled against me, and let myself sit with the question she asked three nights ago instead of pushing it away the way I’ve been doing since. I can live with being afraid of something real. I don’t know if I can live with being kept here because it’s easier for you than letting me go.
The words haven’t lost any weight in three days.
If anything, they’ve settled deeper, sitting somewhere behind my ribs alongside everything else I haven’t fully resolved about how this ends, a quiet pressure that doesn’t ease just because the house around us has.
I don’t have an answer tonight either. But for the first time since she asked, I let myself actually consider what it would mean to find one.
I think about what it would take to actually neutralize the Sokolov threat instead of just managing it, about whether that’s even something I can promise her a timeline for, about how much longer she’ll wait, whether patience like hers has a limit I haven’t found yet.
