I watch as she stands and walks toward me. I keep my eyes on her as she steps past me, and I close the door.
“What’s going on? Did you find something? A raccoon?”
Abel scoffs. “You really need to start trusting your instincts more. You know damn well it wasn’t a raccoon in your house.”
She sighs, and I move closer to her side. I want her to know she’s not alone. Even if she has no idea who’s in the picture, she’s not alone.
“You’re right. Show me what you have.” Sibley steels herself. I can feel the tension rolling off her as Abel raises the tablet and focuses on the clearest picture of the man from the surveillance footage.
I hear her gasp, and then my hands jerk just in time to keep her from falling backward.
Chapter
Fifteen
Sibley
“No, no, no,” I whisper more to myself than to anyone else.
There’s no way I’m looking at who I’m looking at.
There’s no way he can be here.
It’s been centuries.
More than centuries. Thousands of centuries, maybe.
I thought he’d given up his quest to take my powers for himself after Orpheus nearly killed him last time.
Yet, somehow I’m staring at a photo of him.
“Shit, hold on. Just hold on,” Primal mutters from next to me before he turns me in his arms and lifts me clear off the ground, cradling me against his chest.
“Primal, I know this situation is fucked up, but we need to talk to her. I need to understand what she knows,” Abel remarks from behind us, lowering the tablet he holds.
It takes me a moment to realize that Primal is rushing me away.
“She needs to rest. Not now,” he shouts back.
“No, I’m okay.” I look into Primal’s eyes—sheer determination in those dark orbs.
“You’re not. You nearly fainted again. We’ll talk about it later.”
“Primal, please trust me.” I push back against him.
He stops moving and stares at me for a second. “Fine, but I swear if this causes a breakdown or something, I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
I chuckle half-heartedly. A few days ago, I would have deemed Primal the main source of my mental anguish, as I’m sure I’ve been the same for him. Now, he’s concerned that I didn’t get too upset.
“I’m going to be fine. Just let me sit.”
He nods and sets me down in a chair. It’s then I realize we’re in the main room of the clubhouse, not the hallway. Where was he taking me in the first place?
Abel and Coby walk up, and I see Corbin and the rest of the guys coming out of their spaces to crowd around.
"What’s going on?" Corbin asks.
"We found something," Abel announces, handing the tablet to Corbin.
