‘So, you had fun?’ he asked, as our walk slowed down to barely a step.
I thought about replying with something smart or snide, but felt my shoulders drop.
‘It’s been the most fun I’ve had in years,’ I admitted. Then I turned to him. ‘Thank you.’
He moved to stand in front of me, and, immediately, my neck felt cold without his arm around it. But then he rubbed my shoulders with his hands and drew them down till he was gently holding my arms.
He grinned, his smile immediately making me match his.
‘What?’ I asked.
‘That was so close up there,’ he said, his eyes drifting to the big wheel and back to mine.
I paused, biting my lip.
‘C’mon, admit it, Harri. It was close!’ Jamie laughed.
‘You’re obsessed!’ I replied, watching his childlike excitement shine through.
‘Am I?’ His brows furrowed. I could see small clouds of mist coming off his mouth in the cold air.
‘Yes!’ I confirmed, noticing his hands lowering to my wrists, gently tugging at the cuffs of my jacket.
‘Aye, I suppose I am.’ He smirked.
Shit. I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me.
‘Why?’ I asked, looking at him properly. No smiles or jokes. I wanted to know what he actually saw. I wasn’t glamorous right now, I wasn’t fashionable, I wasn’t famous. I was clueless as to why he wanted this version of me.
‘Because you feel it as well,’ he said. ‘Whatever this is between us.’
My throat went dry.
I wanted to look away, but I didn’t. I kept staring at him. His gorgeous brown eyes, his masculine jaw, his cute dimples.
‘And you can deny it all you want, but I know you do, Harri,’ he added. ‘And I know everything is complicated for you in the background. But this,’ he moved his fingers between us, ‘this feels good, doesn’t it?’
I managed a small smile. ‘It does feel good.’
I felt Jamie’s hands wander down to mine, his thumb gently rubbing as he interlaced our fingers.
‘Good is enough,’ he said softly.
I tilted my head. ‘Enough for what exactly?’
His eyes skimmed my mouth again, then came back up to meet mine. ‘For me not to stop the next time.’
Fuck.
‘You sound very confident that there’s going to be a next time, Jamie. Maybe the moment’s passed.’
‘I am very confident.’ He sounded so certain, like he’d already decided this was going to happen.
I could feel my clit pounding through my mum’s knickers like the Jumanji drum in response. What the hell was going on?
‘Well,’ I said, clearing my throat. ‘You’re making a lot of assumptions.’
‘All right.’ He leaned closer. ‘Tell me I’m wrong.’
