Their Rejected Queen

Godric huffs. Rising to his feet, he patters to my side.

I glance over my shoulder and give Sofia a wave. She pinches her brow with worry but offers me a nod.

She trusts the pack master a lot more than I probably should.

Glancing at Godric, I arch a brow. “Does she know something I don’t know?”

He noses my hand, and I instinctually scratch behind his ear.

“This is so weird,” I say with a laugh, then walk toward the east end of the encampment.

Now that I know my way around, I take the discreet route behind the hot springs and avoid the Alpha sector. A few stray shifters spot us, but the second they see Godric, they turn in the other direction.

I keep walking, and some new structures beyond the training grounds catch my attention.

“Is that going to be housing for the new pack joining this one?” I ask.

Godric huffs. I can’t tell if that’s a yes or if he’s just making noises.

Regardless, the stacks of wood and layers of furs give me ample coverage to avoid eyesight as I duck behind them.

Godric follows me and eyes the tonics that I pull out of my pocket. I left my thigh strap in his tent, mostly because I don’t want to risk losing all my tonics if this goes poorly.

“I’m going off camp. So if you have a problem with that, you can bite me,” I tell the pack master.

He just tilts his head.

Frowning, I realize that Godric isn’t entirely being himself. “Are you still in there?” I wonder. “What happened to you? Does this have anything to do with the necklace you gave me breaking?”

He seems much more… animalistic.

He noses my hand again, then paws the ground.

I’m not sure what that means, so I take doses of both tonics and shiver as power rushes through my veins.

“Let’s see if I can figure out how he did this,” I say as I walk to the wall, then I trace an outline with my finger.

A door appears and I smile.

The last time I tried to leave the encampment, Godric hunted me down in a terrifying wolfish wave of fury.

Now, though, he simply watches me as if he’s curious about what I’m doing.

Opening the door, I walk through it, then pause on the other side. “Are you coming?” I ask Godric when I realize that he’s not following me.

He huffs, then sits down, blocking the door’s entryway from the inside.

“You want to guard it,” I guess.

He stares at me with those amber-gold eyes that watch my every movement.

“I may or may not be back,” I tell him.

He huffs, and I swear that’s a laugh.

That probably means he already has an ally out here to keep an eye on me.

You and the Outcast are working together now?
