“I want the job,” I said.
“Then you should take it,” Kit said, pressing a kiss to the side of my head.
“I already gave them your number,” Dakota said. “You’ll get a call soon to work out the details.”
“Dakota,” Kit scolded.
“What? I knew he’d be perfect for it!” she exclaimed.
The two started bickering over Dakota giving out my number without asking, and I watched, bemused that this was my life now.
I’d made peace with Dakota. Found love with Kit.
The future sat before me, full of possibility. Part of me still didn’t think I’d earned it. But another part, the part that loved Kit too much to give him up, was determined to grab it and hold on tight.
I’d allow no one to take it from me now—not even myself.
CHAPTER 34
KIT
I woke suddenly, sunlight pouring across my face. I shielded my eyes with a groan.
“Sorry,” Joey mumbled into my hair. “No avoiding morning here.”
There were blinds, but they couldn’t completely block out the sun pouring through the sliding doors and large windows on every side of the pool house.
I’d stayed with Joey a handful of times, but I’d yet to adjust to Mother Nature’s wake-up call.
“S’okay.” I rolled over, pinning Joey under me. “Now I have more time to ravish you.”
His quiet laugh warmed me. “You might wait until you can pry your eyes open first.”
I blinked, Joey’s sleep-mussed hair coming into focus, then his deep brown eyes, always full of so much emotion. He was easy to read. Right now, he was content.
Happy, even.
That I’d had even the smallest role in that happiness made my heart dance.
The corners of his lips twitched with a smile. I tasted a dimple. Kissed along his jaw to the hollow under his ear. He sighed softly, hands tightening on my shoulders.
I cupped his face, caressing his jaw with my thumbs. “Do you even know how much I love you?”
“I know it must be a lot,” he said.
He wasn’t boasting. His words were solemn. It had taken a lot of love to get us both here. Joey didn’t take it for granted, and neither did I. But I didn’t want our past to drag us down.
“One look at your…yellow Hummer.” I whistled low. “I didn’t stand a chance.”
He laughed, eyes squinting up, and that was perfect. I dropped down, nuzzling into his throat, knowing how Joey hated kissing with morning breath. I slid my hand down between us, taking us both in hand. Joey grabbed the lube from his nightstand and tossed it onto the bed beside me.
I put it to good use until both of us were moaning and writhing, racing toward a sweet release.
Afterward, I spooned Joey, content to stay in bed all morning. It was a Saturday, and I had nowhere important to be.
His phone beeped on the nightstand. He stretched out an arm to grab it.
“That better not be anything that requires you to get out of this bed,” I said, tightening my arms around him.
