I quirked an eyebrow. “That eager to see me, huh?”
To my surprise, he didn’t deny it. “You were more appetizing.”
I grinned. “Well, how about I get you something to eat now? That’s not me, I mean.”
“I can grab something when I get home.”
“Or you can lay there and relax while I pop over to my parents’ house and grab some of my mom’s leftover stroganoff.”
He hummed. “Canned soup or homemade dinner? I guess there’s no real competition there.”
“Nope.” I kissed the tip of his nose. “Stay put.”
I rolled out of bed and picked up the bath towel Kit had taken off me to mop up. I’d need a shower, but I’d save that for when I got back.
I went to my dresser and grabbed a pair of basketball shorts. I stepped into them and half turned to catch Kit watching me.
“Want a drink, too?” I asked.
“Sure,” he said. “Whatever’s handy.”
I jogged over to the main house, shivering in the autumn breeze and cursing myself for not pulling on a hoodie.
My parents were in the family room. I could hear a movie playing.
I grabbed the leftovers, heated them up, and snagged a couple of Sprites from the fridge.
Mom came into the kitchen just as I reached the door. Damn. So close.
“I thought I heard you.”
She did a double take, gaze skimming over me. “You shouldn’t go outside without a shirt, honey.”
“Yeah, bad choice on my part. But it’s a quick run between houses.”
She glanced down at the two Sprites balanced on top of the plastic container of leftovers. “You have company again?”
“Mom, let’s chat later, okay?”
“I want to meet this boy.”
Yeah, not happening anytime soon. I shouldered open the door. “Bye!”
“Next time wear a jacket!” she called after me.
I ran across the lawn, cursing when a rock bit into the bottom of my foot. Next time I’d wear a hoodie and shoes.
I got to the pool house, shivering, and fumbled open the sliding glass door. Kit met me there, relieving me of the sodas.
I turned and slammed the door shut. “Fuck, it’s cold.”
“And after all that work I did to heat you up,” Kit teased.
“You might have to try again,” I said. “Maybe in the shower?”
He held his phone in one hand again. He glanced down at it. “Uh, maybe.”
“Waiting on a better offer?” I asked tightly.
