Of course, that meant that she would be spending all of her time alone with Liam now, who just might have a girlfriend. But Claire and Liam were merely friends coming together to do something nice for his mom. That was all.
She glanced toward him as he hung up his phone again from yet another tree farm, the both of them standing off to the side of the Winter Wonderland entryway.
“Any luck?” she asked.
“Unfortunately, no. Every lot is booked solid. The earliest delivery options are for tomorrow afternoon.”
Claire let out a disappointed sigh. She’d really wanted to have that tree tonight. And she really didn’t want to go back into the fair. But with no car—Tasha’s at her work and Liam’s back at his house—they were running out of options.
“What about a taxi?” she asked.
“No, they wouldn’t allow it atop the car.”
She tapped a finger to her chin. “The bus?”
“Not likely.”
“The Underground?”
His eyes squinted in a smile. “I’m fairly certain that’s illegal.”
“Fairly certain or absolutely?” she pressed.
“We can’t take a tree on the Tube.”
She rolled her eyes with pretend annoyance. “Fine. I guess we’ll just be boring and wait until tomorrow to have it delivered.”
“Sorry,” Liam said, looking down at his phone. “Short of carrying it all the way home, I think waiting might be the best option.”
Claire looked up at him, the cogs turning in her mind as she waited for him to meet her gaze.
When he did, he pulled back. “What?”
“That’s the best idea you’ve had all day.”
“What idea?”
“You. Carrying it home.”
He was silent for a minute before a scoff escaped his lips. “You can’t be serious.”
She opened her mouth in a wide, encouraging grin. “Come on, it’ll be fun!”
“And what would be fun about it exactly?”
“I dunno. Just the adventure of it all.”
But Liam shook his head. “I think I’d rather not.”
Claire pulled her lips to the side, thinking of another route. “Well, if we don’t have the excuse of getting a tree, then, I guess we’d better go back in there.”
She motioned with her thumb over her shoulder to where Winter Wonderland still blared with music, laughter, and a kissing Dean and Melody.
Liam cringed.
“Or…” Claire took a sliding step toward him with raised eyebrows. “We find the closest tree lot to your house and bring the Christmas spirit into your home for your mom.”
Liam looked down at her with a wary gaze.
