“Woah,” Dean says from behind me. “There was a weird streak across the screen just now.”
I can tell it’s not a bug, because those look very specific on screen. It’s also not a lens flare, because all the lights are off and the sun is down. There are no other cameras in here, and we still have nothing from the pod. I’m hoping the other camera in the corner might be catching some whispers or coherent voices. There has been a strange feeling in here since we walked in. The air is heavier on this floor, but especially in this room. It’s tense in here, and I know we can get something good.
Maybe this spirit just needs a little more enticing. Maybe I’ve been going about this all wrong.
“Or maybe whoever is in here is a coward,” I say, a little louder than before.
“What are you doing?” Dean whispers, and I ignore him.
“Are you a coward because you don’t feel like talking to me? Or maybe because you’re the one who killed all the innocent people during this surgery? Which is it? A coward or a killer? Or both?”
The pod in front of me lights up for the first time tonight.
“So a killer it is then.” I smirk. “Were you the doctor who performed the surgery?”
It lights up again, so I keep goading it, hoping it might lead to something cool.
“Do you recognize this?” I ask as I place a scalpel down on the bed.
“Where did you get that?” Dean asks me, and I again ignore him.
“Does this look familiar to you?”
The pod lights up again.
“I figured it would. You murdered innocent people before you took your own life. I’m sure that’s why you’re stuck here, huh? Because you know what you did, and you can’t rest.”
The light goes out, the energy in this room charged with something I can’t put my finger on. Three thumps from the window into the scrub room startle me, and I feel the camera as I turn to face it.
“Again with the three knocks, huh?”
Bang! Bang! Bang!
I step backwards, the air freezing cold around me.
“Aubs, what are you doing?”
“I’m not scared of you how everyone else was!”
I feel something hot against the back of my neck, and my hand feels a small bump forming. The lights start to flicker, as if the spirit is waving its hand over it.
“Ow,” I say as something else touches the back of my arm. It hurts—burns. “Fuck.”
“Aubs? Aubrey?” Dean sounds panicked, and I feel him grab my good arm, dragging me out of the room. He clicks his flashlight on as he sets the camera down, searching my face, hands running all over my body as I try to regain my breathing.
That was insane!
“Oh my gosh, that was the best thing we’ve ever caught on camera.”
“Look at me, please,” he begs, his eyes focusing on the back of my arm. “There’s a red line down your arm and on your neck. I’m getting you out of here.”
“But—”
“Please, Aubs.” The back of his hand touches against my forehead. “You're burning up. Your skin is flushed and pale. You don’t look good.”
“Gee, way to hit a girl while she’s up,” I say as I sway on my feet. “I guess I do feel a little weird.”
“That’s what happens when you entice ghosts,” he says, scooping me up and heading for the exit.
