“Why?”
Her shoulders slumped. “I don’t know, because he was my husband, and you’re all here at his funeral?”
“No. Come on. Let’s go.”
“Um, sure. Just let me pee first. Sorry!”
After she used the bathroom, she ended up in Ammo’s truck while the others followed behind them in a different truck.
“Does anyone have any food allergies?” she asked.
“No.”
“Is there anything that anyone doesn’t like?”
“If they don’t like it, they don’t have to eat it,” he replied.
Sheesh, it wasn’t that simple, was it? She didn’t want to serve something that somebody hated. Although maybe she’d just pull out several things from the freezer and put them in the oven.
“No vegetarians?”
“Nope.”
“You’re just full of information, aren’t you?” she said.
He raised an eyebrow and glanced over at her.
“Thanks for being there today,” she told him. “And for sticking up for me with Ed. I wasn’t sure I was going to see you again after you left Friday night.”
He sighed as though he didn’t want to talk about this, and she wished she hadn’t brought it up.
“Sorry,” he said.
“What?” Why was he apologizing to her?
He pulled into her driveway. “I shouldn’t have left you like that.”
“Why did you?” she asked.
Ammo shook his head but didn’t say anything. Maybe he didn’t know why he’d left her, or maybe he didn’t want to tell her.
He got out and walked around the truck, then helped her down. She turned and saw Zander doing the same with Keira, although she understood that since Keira had quite a large stomach.
“How far along is Keira?” she asked Ammo as they started to walk toward them up the sidewalk.
“How far along? I don’t know. It feels like it’s been eighteen months.”
“Keira, when is your baby due?” she asked.
“In four months’ time,” Keira replied. “I’m quite large, aren’t I? Well, it is Zander’s baby, so he or she is probably going to come out bigger than I am.”
“God, I hope not,” Zander said, looking slightly horrified.
They walked into the house, and she put Kevin in his cage with his dinner before giving everyone a drink. As she put some food into the oven she realized that it had all gone quiet. Where were they all? Grabbing herself a beer, she walked out the back, following the sound of voices, and found the guys were all tackling the yard in their nice clothes.
“What are you doing? You don’t have to do that,” she said, spotting Keira and Honey sitting on the only two pieces of furniture that were out here. She hoped that they didn’t get splinters from the old wooden chairs. They had brought their drinks out with them.
Zander shrugged his wide shoulders. “We like to keep busy.”
