Blonde, pretty chick?

Was he talking about Kirsten?

“How do you know about her? Have you been watching me?”

“Sure have. Didn’t you notice me following you?”

Oh God.

Had he been the one following her this morning . . . was it just this morning? It felt like so long ago.

Without another word, he got in his truck and took off. She wanted to collapse there on the sidewalk, to just give up. What was the point anymore?

There was no way she could find thirty thousand dollars. She could barely even come up with three hundred dollars. It was all so ridiculous.

But she forced herself to make her way to the house, a house that it seemed she had to sell really quick. Would she get enough to pay back the debt, especially with Kelly-Anne breathing down her neck? And there was no way she could sell it in such a short amount of time.

Oh, God. This was all a disaster. What was she going to do?

Should she tell Ammo? But no, he had enough to cope with at the moment, and this could just be putting him in danger as well.

Shit. She’d already caused enough trouble in Ammo’s life. She couldn’t put this on his plate too. And he was in jail, for God’s sake.

Not to mention he hadn’t seemed like he’d even wanted to be around her today. He’d seemed irritated by her. As though he was just going through the motions with her.

No, this was her issue. She had to deal with it. And just being around her could be dangerous for Ammo.

It was really time for him to leave.

“Zander,” Ammo said into the phone.

“Ammo, why are you calling me from the county sheriff’s department?” Zander asked.

“Because last night I got arrested for assaulting a woman.”

“Shit, you didn’t spank Aimee in public, did you?” Zander said. “Because that’s a bit of a no-no now. Once upon a time, you might have got away with that, but now you have to go somewhere private.”

He sighed. “No, I didn’t do that.” He was very aware of the deputy standing next to him.

“I didn’t assault anyone. It’s a false accusation from a woman who is jealous of Aimee. She’s the one that stood up at the funeral and declared she was pregnant with Charlie’s baby.”

“Oh, her,” Zander said in a cold voice. “She’s accused you of assaulting her?”

“Yeah, the only time I saw her yesterday was at a lawyer’s office when there was a reading of the will. I got between her and Aimee when she tried to attack Aimee.”

“The lawyer was there?” Zander asked.

“Yep, but I don’t know if he’s going to tell the truth or not. People in this town seem to like to bend the truth and the law.”

“Got it. Want me to get Gwen onto this?”

“Yeah, that’d be good.”

“You need me to come to Greasy Knob? I’ll teach these bastards that we’re not to be messed with.”

Ammo didn’t want to pull him away from Keira, and he didn’t want Zander to bring Keira to this crazy town again. However, he also didn’t want Aimee on her own if this went on much longer.
