Seriously? That was meant to be good news? She stood and stretched her body.

“Where are you now?” Kirsten asked her.

“Outside the sheriff’s department, about to head home.”

“I’ll come pick you up. You shouldn’t be walking home in the dark by yourself.”

“It’s fine. You don’t want to drive all the way into town. It’s not that far to walk. I’ll be all right.” Even though it was dark and after midnight.

A shiver ran through her.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. Ammo wouldn’t be very impressed.”

“Well, Ammo’s currently in a jail cell, so he doesn’t have much say in what I do, does he?”

She had no idea how she was going to get him out of there. The sheriff seemed to have his mind set that Ammo had assaulted Kelly-Anne. She just had to hope that Matthew would speak up tomorrow.

He was probably just asleep, and that was why he wasn’t answering his phone. Lord knew she should be asleep right now. She started heading toward her house with Kirsten still on the phone.

“I really think I should come and get you. Just stay where you are.”

“I don’t want to stay near the sheriff’s department. They’ll probably arrest me for loitering or something. The sheriff already threatened me because I made some accusations about Kelly-Anne being a liar.”

“Hardly an accusation when it’s the truth,” Kirsten said.

“Right, but he said it could be considered slander, and that I would be wasting his valuable time.”

“That dick shouldn’t be the sheriff. Well, just stay on the line with me, will you? So I know that you’re all right.”

“My phone’s about to die. I’ll stay on with you for a short while, but then I’ll have to turn it off so I can message you when I get home, okay?”

“Ugh, I hate this,” Kirsten said. “We should definitely get Ammo a lawyer. Don’t know if Matthew can do it if he’s a witness.”

“Oh, wait. He does have a friend who’s a lawyer. Well, I’m not sure she’s a friend.”

“Yeah, Ammo doesn’t really seem the type to have that many friends. Although there were those guys at the funeral, I guess. They were a bit odd, right?”

“I thought they were fun,” Aimee told her. “But maybe I should call Zander in the morning and see what he thinks, especially if Matthew can’t help.”

“Good plan,” Kirsten said. “God, this town sucks sometimes. “That bitch Kelly-Anne gets to go around doing whatever she wants. I’d like to punch her in the face.”

“Yes, well, don’t. I don’t need you ending up in jail too,” she told Kirsten.

“Pretty sure it would be worth it,” Kirsten replied.

Yeah. Aimee thought it would be worth it too.

“Right, I’m going to end the call now. I’ll keep my phone on me, but I need to conserve some battery.”

“All right, just be careful, okay?”

“Of course, I’m always careful. Careful is my middle name.”

“Really? Then how come you always end up in so much trouble?” It was something very similar to what Ammo had said to her, and nearly had her sniffling.

You have to be stronger than this. Ammo is going to be all right. He’s a big guy who can take care of himself.

She reached her street and a sigh of relief filled her as she realized that she was only a couple of hundred feet from home. She’d made it back safe. Probably be a good idea if she didn’t tell Ammo how she’d walked home by herself.
