“Yes, Ammo would, because that’s the sort of guy he is. Honestly, you’re not really that good at reading him.”
“I’m not? What do you mean? And why is this guy following so closely behind me? Get off my ass, man!” Kirsten yelled.
Kirsten tapped her brakes, and Aimee glanced behind to see there was a big truck right on their heels. A tendril of worry unfurled in her stomach. Who was in the truck? And why were they following them so closely? Why didn’t they pass them? They were on the outskirts of town now and there was no one else around this early.
But then the truck backed off a bit, and she let out a sigh of relief. Probably just someone who wasn’t paying close attention. Or an asshole.
There were plenty of those around.
“Well, you thought he was a Daddy and he’s not.”
“Shit, did you ask him?” Kirsten said. “Go you.”
“Oh, I didn’t just ask him.” She placed her hand over her face and let out a groan as she slumped back in her seat. “There’s another reason why I snuck out this morning. It wasn’t just because he said I was going to live with him, and I wanted to avoid that conversation. Or because he said I’m owed a spanking for breaking the rules.”
“Oh my God, you are in deep. What else could possibly have happened? Because that all seems like a good enough reason to sneak out of the house, without him knowing. What, was he still asleep or something?”
“No, he was in the shower after going for a run,” Aimee said.
“Oh, man. I can’t imagine that man running. He’s got too much muscle on him. It would still be sexy as hell, especially if he took off his shirt and ran in just a pair of short shorts.”
“Hey, stop fantasizing about him. He’s mine,” Aimee told her.
Shoot. Where had that come from?
He wasn’t hers and she knew it. If Ammo and Kirsten wanted to get together they could.
Kirsten pulled into the Emporium, and the truck that had been behind them sped past. Someone was definitely in a rush.
“Sorry,” Kirsten said. “I didn’t mean to upset you, Aimee. It’s just that he’s a fine specimen of a man, that’s all. I’m not trying to do anything with him . . . or saying that I even want to. I’m just saying that he’s good-looking and I appreciate that.”
Aimee shook her head and reached over to grab her friend’s hand. “No, I’m the one that should apologize. I shouldn’t have reacted like that. Hell, if you do want him, you should go for it. It’s not like he’s interested in me.”
Kirsten narrowed her gaze at her. “Did he really say that?”
“Yeah.”
Kirsten parked her car, then turned to her. “I think you better come into the office, get some coffee, and explain what the hell is going on.”
Aimee nodded and followed her into the large building. They turned on all the lights and did all the set up before settling into Kirsten’s office with coffee.
Aimee took a fortifying sip. “I asked him if he’d be my Daddy.”
Kirsten spat coffee out all over her desk. “You what? You seriously asked him that?”
“Yep. I just came straight out and asked him. Of course, I blame the sleeping pill I’d taken.”
“Oh my God, Aimee, you took a sleeping pill last night?”
“Yes. And just like normal, I still couldn’t sleep, but my mouth started to run away on me.”
“You’re terrible on sleeping pills,” Kirsten told her.
“I know, I know. That’s why I stopped taking them, because they weren’t doing the one thing they were supposed to. I seem to have some sort of weird reaction when I’m on them. It’s like they’re a truth serum or something.”
“I don’t think they’re like a truth serum. I think they just lower those barriers you have up, and you stop overthinking every word and just be yourself. It’s not a bad thing.”
“Right. It’s not a bad thing unless you ask the sexy, hot guy who promised your dead husband to take care of you if he’ll be your Daddy.”
