“How will skinny dipping put me at risk?” she asked as she swayed again then yawned.
It was clear that she was exhausted. He needed to get her into bed.
“You’d probably get arrested and end up in jail.”
“Oh, true. I don’t think I’d like jail very much. Do you? Although then I wouldn’t have to worry about all my bills and all the crazy Annes in town.”
“All the crazy Annes?” he asked. What the fuck did that mean? “And you don’t have to worry about the bills anymore, remember?”
“Well, I’ve got to worry about paying you back. I know that money I gave you probably wasn’t even a dent in the debt.”
It really wasn’t, but he wasn’t going to tell her that. He didn’t want her sneaking off to do anything crazy in order to make more money to pay him back. He still didn’t have any clue how she’d gotten her hands on that much money.
“Don’t worry about that at the moment,” he said as he picked her up and placed her in front of the open window. “And what do you mean all the Annes in town?”
She scrambled inside, nearly tripping. Fuck, he would have taken her around the front of the house, but he didn’t have his key on him. He followed her, closing the window behind him.
Aimee put Kevin back in his cage, then turned to Ammo.
“All the Annes, didn’t you notice? There is Kelly-Anne, and then we met her cousin, Sally-Anne at the doctor’s clinic. Kelly-Anne has got a sister called Melanie-Anne and their mother’s called Betty-Anne. They’re all as nasty as each other, if I’m honest.”
“Well, don’t worry about them. I’ll make sure they’re not nasty to you anymore. If they are, they’re going to suffer.”
He’d make certain of that. No one got to hurt her again.
“How big is this revenge list that you’ve got?” she said as she stumbled over toward the bed. He had to clench his fists, so he didn’t snatch her up in his arms and carry her to his own bed.
So he could keep an eye on her, of course.
She still held her toy owl, and her hair was up in messy bun. She looked adorable.
Fuck. What was he thinking? He really hadn’t used the word adorable, had he?
She snuggled down under the covers of the bed, leaning back against the headboard. “Ooh, that’s better. It was cold outside.”
He narrowed his gaze at her. “You shouldn’t be out in the cold. You’ll get sick.”
“You’re always concerned about me getting sick, aren’t you? Eat all your food or you’ll get sick.” She pointed her finger at him as she spoke in a deep voice. Was that meant to be him? If so, it was very far off.
She sounded like a cross between Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster. Is that how she saw him? Somewhere in between Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster?
“Don’t climb up on the roof or you’ll fall. Don’t go out in the cold or you’ll get sick. Don’t skinny dip or you’ll get arrested. Honestly, you’re just a real worrywart, aren’t you, Silly Willy?” Another big yawn.
“I’m not a worrywart.” No one had ever accused him of being that before. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d really ever worried about anything.
But he had done a lot of worrying in the last few days, hadn’t he?
“What’s going on with you?” he asked. “What were you doing up on the roof thinking? What did you have to think about? Why are you swaying?”
“I’m not swaying!” she said as she literally swayed back and forth while sitting in bed. “The room keeps moving.”
“It’s not moving.”
“You are moving! And I told you what I was thinking about.”
“So nothing in particular? You weren’t thinking about our conversation earlier?” he asked.
She moved down under the bedspread, so everything was covered except for her eyes, and stared up at him.
