My name in her mouth still does things to me I have no defense for.
I kiss her again.
She comes closer, awkward over the console, and I catch her waist, helping her shift until she’s half across the space between us. Not in my lap. Not quite. But close enough that I feel the warmth of her through her coat, close enough that her thigh presses against mine and my body starts making demands I have no intention of satisfying here.
My mouth moves to her jaw.
She tilts her head back. “Don’t,” she breathes.
I stop immediately.
Her fingers tighten in my coat. “No, I mean…” She exhales, frustrated with herself. “Don’t stop like that.”
I pull back enough to look at her. “Use better words.”
Her eyes darken.
Then she says, very quietly, “Kiss me.”
So I do. Slow this time. She climbs over the center console awkwardly, one knee on the seat, one hand braced against my shoulder. I catch her at the waist before she slips, and she lets out a breathless laugh against my mouth.
“This is stupid,” she whispers.
“Yes.”
“Really stupid.”
“Yes.”
“Stop agreeing with me.”
I pull her fully onto my lap. “No.”
She kisses me first this time. Her mouth opens under mine, hungry and warm, and I feel the whole night come back at once: the restaurant, the drive, her looking at me like she wanted to be braver than she felt.
My hands slide under her coat, finding her waist through the thin fabric of her dress. She is softer than memory and hotter than she should be in the cold car. Her knees press into the leather on either side of my hips, and when she settles down against me, I’m already hard enough that she gasps.
I stop.
Her forehead touches mine. “Don’t.”
“This position—”
“I’m comfortable.”
“Maggie.”
She pulls back enough to look at me. Her cheeks are flushed, but her eyes are steady. “I’ll tell you if I’m not.”
I believe her.
I hate how much I want to.
Her hips move once, small and involuntary, and any sliver of sane thought is gone.
I kiss her again, one hand in her hair, the other low on her back, holding her steady as she rocks against me. The windows start to fog around us, the city outside turning into blurred lights and shadow.
She makes a little sound into my mouth. I catch it. Swallow it. Want another.
