It only amplified the rage in mine.
The thirst…the hunger…to decimate anyone who would ever think to do Elena harm.
“We already have the contingency out searching the Crimson Creek area. Twenty of us will join them. The rest will stand guard here at the compound. We can’t be sure he isn’t setting a trap. This fucker has already proven he is targeting my family.”
Fury blistered out of Silas with that, and my insides tumbled and fisted.
“This ends today,” he said, then he listed off the men he wanted on the brigade, Phoenix, Brody, and I included.
Like any of us would have it any other way.
“Let’s roll. It’s time to put this parasite in the ground where he belongs.”
I didn’t know what possessed me, but my hand shot out and wrapped around Silas’s wrist.
“He’s mine,” I growled.
Silas’s attention jerked to me.
Questions sheared through his expression, and I wondered if he saw something in mine that hadn’t been there before. Because I thought for the first time since he assigned me to Elena’s care, there might be some distrust behind it.
Then he gave a clipped nod. “He’s all of ours.”
Then he turned on his heel and stormed out through the massive double doors.
A flurry of mayhem whipped in the air as we plodded down the corridor. A rebellion of boots thudding on the hard floor and reverberating the walls.
We pushed into the bar and out into the blinding light.
Sun poured down like streams of lava. Rays stroking against the heat that singed our flesh.
The unit assigned to the mission climbed onto their bikes, and a battle cry of engines roared into the atmosphere. A deep resonation that rolled the ground and scattered out across the land.
An omen.
A promise.
My attention shifted to the house hidden deep in the trees. Thoughts tipping to Elena who was safely tucked behind its walls.
The oath I’d taken to always protect her boomed in my spirit.
Because this…this was what was important. This was what I was called to do. Meting vengeance for the ones who deserved it most.
I didn’t get more than that. I’d been a selfish fool to consider otherwise.
Silas pulled back on his throttle, revving his engine in a call to arms, before he lifted his boot and took to the dirt lane.
We wound around the autobody shop and out onto the road. Silas was half a bike ahead of us, Phoenix and I riding in our positions.
The rest of our crew gathered behind.
A throng of cuts and animosity.
Hatred burned as we chased down the only thing that had ever mattered.
Destroying the wicked to give the sinless peace.
Obliterating the monsters so the angels could live without fear.
