“Shit, Elena. Knew we shouldn’t take you there. You didn’t need to see all that vileness going down. Wanted to take you to some fun party where you could dance and meet some friends. Let go and spread your wings.” He scoffed. “Only associates we’ve got are killers and fiends.”
His words hit her like bullets.
Making her jolt.
She had suspicions, but it was the first time she heard one of them admit it.
So messed up because that wasn’t even why she was upset.
“I’m just tired.”
His voice softened in an apology. “Fuck, Lena, wanted you to have an amazing birthday. We ruined it.”
Facing the door, her head shook. “I’m just going to go to bed.”
She tried. She climbed right into bed without changing out of her dress and tried to sleep, but her wish kept replaying through her mind.
His body.
His hands.
The softness on his rugged, terrifying face.
Did he know? Could he see how she felt?
She tossed for hours before she slipped out of bed, then crept down the hall. She didn’t knock before she quietly unlatched his door.
Did it make her a horrible person, what she was doing? Was that woman his girlfriend? Did he love her?
At the thought, her heart threatened to crack all over again.
She had to try. Show him.
His room was dark, but she could make him out where he was asleep in the middle of his bed. A foreboding, beautiful silhouette.
On his back, his chest bare and his sheets twisted around his waist.
She gulped at the sight of him, and her knees knocked as she crossed to his bed.
Drawn.
Desperate.
She crawled up onto her knees at his side. Whispered his name. “Trevan.”
He flew upright, his eyes wild and frantic as they darted around the room before they fully focused on her.
“Lena. What’s wrong?” he raked through his surprise.
She stalled, nerves firing, fear clambering through her senses.
But she had to try.
She wasn’t a child anymore.
“I need to tell you my wish.”
Confusion twisted his brow, and his already deep voice was rough with sleep. “Thought you weren’t supposed to tell anyone if you wanted it to come true?”
