“You went off and left us. No more fun for you.” She caught on, too.
This was our life. We lived it the best that we could.
“Hey now,” I pouted as I parked my hands on my hips. “That’s just rude.”
“We no rude, Wena. We joke!” Kai furiously nodded his head like he was eager to convince me of the jest.
God, how was this child so cute? So sweet?
Affection bubbled over, and I ran my knuckles down his cheek. “I know, baby. We have all the love always, don’t we?”
“Kai woves Wena.” More bobbing of his head.
“And Brinley loves her too.” Brinley’s mouth tweaked in her belief.
“Me, too,” I whispered.
Then her attention flicked between me and Trevan who had strode over to Silas. The two of them sharing harsh words below their breaths.
She looked right back to me and mouthed, “What happened between you two last night?”
I gave her a jerky shake of my head. One that clearly told her later.
Her face twisted, clearly in agony having to wait.
Meems stood and moved to the top of the steps. “There’s my girl.”
“Hi, Meems.”
She studied me, her worry clear. “You good, sweet one?”
I brushed the moisture from my eyes. “Yep. I’m good. Better than good.”
How could I not be? Trevan and I were both unscathed after the attack. I had my store and this family.
We were safe and surrounded.
And Trevan and I had…
Meems’ brow arched like she had drilled directly into my sordid thoughts. “How’d the rest of the party go last night?”
The last was packed with innuendo.
“Well, there wasn’t much more of it after you left. We just cleaned up.”
My voice had to have been fifteen octaves higher than normal.
Speculation lifted her brows, and her eyes raked over me. “Huh, would have thought you’d stay up all night celebrating.”
“Oh no, definitely not.”
I mean, I had basically passed out once we got back to my apartment. Both from the draining of adrenaline and the mind-blowing orgasms.
I figured it’d be best if I didn’t admit that in front of the entire family.
She climbed down the stairs and pulled me into a strong hug. Voice held for me. “Was terrified when we got the news. Terrified of someone hurting you.”
“I’m okay,” I promised.
