A severing of peace as the air flipped into bedlam.
Shouts from the Crows who had been standing guard suddenly echoed and banged.
But it was really only Trevan’s that I could hear. “Fuck, Lena. Are you okay? Are you okay? Tell me you’re fucking okay.”
FIFTY
TREVAN
Aggression pumped fury through my veins. An onslaught of hate and desperation as I covered Elena with my body.
Horror and rage blistered through my senses. Each of them hewn in the bloodlust that coated my tongue.
The desolate thirst to put an end to this.
Because this was no longer a vague, nebulous threat.
This was war.
“Are you hurt?” I grunted through the fear that gripped me in a vise. I needed to hear her voice.
To know that she was whole and fine and that I hadn’t been so distracted and jacked in the head over what had happened this morning that I’d allowed her to be injured.
Elena heaved for shocked breaths below me. Her sweet body pinned to the ground with my full weight on top of her.
But I couldn’t move. Couldn’t take the chance that the bastard would return for a rebound.
“I…I don’t think so,” she rasped.
Footsteps thundered around us as the Crows on duty raced up. I peeked that way to find their guns drawn, each on high alert as they scanned the area.
But clearly that alert wasn’t high enough since this had been allowed to happen. This motherfucker had snuck in and what, put a bomb under her truck?
How the fuck had this happened?
“Are you guys hurt?” Pyke raked through the caged aggression that seethed between his teeth.
“Don’t think so. Is it clear?” The words were as rutty as the rocks below us.
“Don’t see a fuckin’ thing,” Regan hissed below his breath, the guy turning a circle. “How the fuck did he get to the truck?”
I finally started to peel myself off of Elena. Slowly. My eyes skated the lot before she shifted, and I extended my hand and helped her up to sit.
I nearly blew a fucking gasket when I saw her scraped-to-shit knee. Blood dribbling out. “You’re hurt.”
She blinked, disoriented, before she shook her head, her words thin. “It’s nothing.”
“It’s not fucking nothing.” I growled it.
Not when she was everything.
He’d gotten…close. Was right here. Had…
Gulping over the disturbance, I looked around the area. Saw the small shards of metal scattered on the ground near the underside of her truck. The charred, blackened rocks. A slice of burnt cardboard.
My teeth ground. “Another fucking box.”
“With a fuckin’ pipe bomb in it?” Brody snarled as he glanced back, the five of them still standing around us. A living, raving ring of aggression.
