I was moving before I could make true sense of what hurtled me in that direction.
“That right there is the whole reason that I don’t trust anyone else but you with my sister.”
There was Silas.
The voice of reason impaling me with a shout from behind.
A reason that nearly fucking cracked me in two.
But I couldn’t stop.
Couldn’t slow.
I cut right into the raving, disordered crowd. The lapping darkness was only cut by the rhythmic strokes of white, disorienting light.
The vibe chaotic.
Lawless and frenzied.
I was behind Elena in a second flat.
Looming over her like a rabid beast that needed to be put down for all of society’s sake.
At least for Elena’s.
We were right smack in the middle of the dance floor. In the midst of a ton of Crows and bunnies. Somehow, it still felt secluded.
Hedged in the bodies that paid us no mind.
My hands clutched into fists as I attempted to control the rage that scorched my insides, but it only grew as Dice deepened that position, angling Elena back a fraction.
Clearly having no fucking clue that I was there, and he was five seconds from getting dead.
There was nothing I could do but settle my hand onto the middle of Elena’s back. You know, since that asshat’s arm was curled over the sweet spot where mine belonged.
In my periphery, I barely caught Brinley’s expression.
The woman’s face was contorted in what could only be construed as a triumphant smirk.
What the fuck?
Didn’t have time to really contemplate it, though. Not when there were more pressing matters at hand.
“Step the fuck back.” The command slashed off my tongue.
Dice’s head popped up in surprise.
Dude would be lucky if he didn’t lose it.
Only he gave me this slow, cocky grin when he found me towering there.
“Ah, there he is. The guard dog. Was wondering when you were going to appear.”
What I was wondering was if there was any chance he wouldn’t have the life snuffed out of him tonight.
Dude playing with the death card like he didn’t believe the true severity of what he was tiptoeing into.
I couldn’t seem to form any words. Just a strangled sound that amounted to a snarl made it between my lips.
